So is Planetcrap dead then?
April 8th 2008, 02:18 CEST by Chunkstyle

In #planetcrap the question came up of whether the site is finally dead.  Post counts are down to the level of when the Crap started, the number of posters is way down (especially when you include Joker alts), and the level of discussion has dropped as well.

So is that it?  Have the multitude of other gaming sites and forums removed the need for the crappiest place on the web?  Will the last one to leave forever please turn off the server?

I also vouch for the '"n00bs" get flamed and don't come back' thing as being overrated. Look at TreeFrog. We didn't run him off.

I've always maintained that there is no initiation process.  There's just the constant snark and flaming that we're all imune to and noobs aren't.  They either toughen up or they quit.  But there's no "alright, you passed your hazing, now we'll all be civil" like some kind of frat-house debate club.  Really, if you don't enjoy getting called a dickhead sucker fool, this is not the site for you.

I didn't take it personally when Gabe didn't push my topic. I'm not on his cool guy list and that's cool.

That's...pretty much the definition of taking it personally.

Cool guy list? I have almost no interaction with Jibble other than to tell him his kid is boring and he had the impression I push almost everything. What topics am I not pushing that should have been? I've only ever deleted spam or obvious trolls, so if it's not in the submission bin or live, it was voted out.

I'd be in favour of giving 10 or so people the power to push topics, though perhaps not their own.  But not Matt because he's illiterate.  The only reason to not just automatically post everything to the frong page is spam and crap from the troll who must not be named lest you be scolded by funk.  I think it would improve things a lot of people were able to write topics, then post a single "somebody push my topic, you fucks" rather than having to wait for all the fucks to vote, during which time we all mock the topic in the thread where it was announced and by the time it hits the front page we're all bored with it, even though we haven't really discussed it.

Caryn said in #106:
it forces a standard of quality on the topics for discussion, and I like that.

Are you high? It doesn't enforce a standard of quality, it reduces quality to the lowest possible level. Most of the topics here are of the "XXX fucks you up the ass" or "keeping it all in one place" variety. Which is fine by me because I don't think I really want to visit yet another forum that has meaningful topics with small, but focused discussion centering on those topics. Or at least, the transition would be hard to get used to after having experienced PC in its broken state for so long.

It's a standard of quality that's a step above a system that would allow any topic to be immediately posted (which would flood PC with the troll submissions that get deleted or ignored currently). The standard of quality just happens to be limited in scope right now to what types of submissions we're getting. If we had some Andy Smith-type submissions we might see the criteria for acceptance and rejection rise in standards. But when you're choosing between the troll submissions and "sports to keep it all in one place"...eh, the standard of quality is still being enforced even if the bar is low.

You're worse than friggan gunp0int. What car did buy and what are you fixing, etc.

I bought a BMW 325i Touring with what I thought was a burnt head gasket.

But the fault is with the cylinder head itself, which seems to be cracked (apparently a widespread issue on E30 BMWs). I couldn't find a used cylinder head that I trusted, so I went and bought a whole car that was pretty cheap, so I was buying an engine I'd seen running.

I'm taking out its head plus the tail lights, because the car I want to keep has tail lights that have been entirely coated red, which in Germany is asking for trouble, plus I might keep the original headlights as well because the car I bought first has a pair of those so-called Angel Eyes, and I don't know how durable those are. The rest will have to go, which really is a shame because the body is very sound and has less rust than the one I'm planning to keep. I could just keep the one I bought for spares but the interior is pretty trashed, the rear diff makes banging noises, and the engine seems to have a little less pull than the one from the other car (which is chipped, dunno how much of a difference that can be, never had a chipped naturally-aspirated car) and it smokes black under heavy acceleration.

So it's either: keep car with some rust, just repair and change cylinder head, or keep car with less rust, but change differential, engine block, repair cylinder and change cyl. head, change seats, change roof lining... And the second option is too much hassle for me only to have a car with a little less rust.

Can I say Wow again? And again?

You guys obviously have a way you're going to think about this. More power to you. I'm neither trying to play the martyrdom card or the Gabe sucks card.

It went like this, Gabe said, I'll push any topic through. I submitted a topic, asked Gabe to push it. He said he didn't like it. I said...well...that sucks. Then, Greg submitted a topic mere minutes later, a empty topic that was just blather and asked Gabe to push it. He did. It was obviously just to bring the funny to my topic not making it in. That's where the cool guy list comment comes in.

Story finished. That's it. I harbor no ill will. I didn't worry about it beyond the "that sucks" thought and didn't do anything else about it or even bring it up until you guys did today.

But again, you'll read this however you want.

I do find it pretty damn amusing though. I guess I really should get on that revenge plan since I can't stop obsessing about it. Wait, I meant laughing at you chaps.

All of that aside, I completely stand by my original statement that having more than one opinion on the submissions can only be a good thing. The talk of, "if it's not in the bin, it wasn't voted in" is cute...because no topic has been voted in awhile. A good long while...because the number of votes has nothing to do with the number of active posters.

Re: Me=Troll.

I'm a bit tired of the Mexican and others jumping all over themselves to call me this, or nazi, dummy etc.

Lately I haven't really posted much. And when I did, I basically just went for cheap and obvious one-liners. Why? Because It's obvious people dislike me and/or many of the opinions I've stated here, and so they don't honor anything I post by answering me like they would to someone else, so I felt it isn't really worth for me to bother writing anything "serious" or "elaborate" (to my standards, however low you might consider them) because people will just ignore it anyway. So it kind of is a vicious cycle.

Looking back at some of the things I posted, yes, some/much of it may not have been too bright or has been badly worded.

For example, my question of young black female's slang. I got keelhauled for that, but to this day I must say I really was curious about this. I looked at how German youths walk around pretending to be Eminem, and heard how they speak like they were some kind of gangstas, even if we are ten thousand kilometers away from your east coast. So I wondered if this phenomenon is only a local thing here in Germany, out of admiration or whatever for US hip-hop stars/lifestyle, or if this "ghetto-talk" is also frequent in US youth's everyday reality.

I often cite TV as a source that influences my ideas of the world, because for someone living on the other side of the ocean, TV is really the only window through which I can look at the USA, besides googling for "how Americans live". And I never said I took anything seen on TV for granted, I've always only asked things like "seen this on TV, is it true?".

Me saying I dislike doner stands on a Christmas market? That wasn't really anti-Turkish or anti-muslemic. I'd have said the same about hamburgers, spaghetti or sauerkraut. I just don't see it fitting to see a ratio of 10 doner stands vs. 1 Christmas specialities stand. No, doners don't offend me. McDonalds doesn't offend me. Pizza doesn't offend me. But on a Christmas market, I only want roasted almonds, hot wine, candybars... stuff like that. That doesn't make me a racist. It may make me a traditionalist, sure.

When I made the n-word joke? That really just was a joke, and your reactions to it have been very exagerated, but may be typical for a society that (maybe just like Germans) is a little bit too obsessed with always being politically correct, maybe out of fear for being accused of something if you aren't.

I could go on but I guess nobody will read it, anyway. Sorry. Now go ahead and insult me, I don't care anymore.

Format, if you're earnest, it's not what you say, but how you say it. For example, trying to be taken seriously when you start off your post with "the Mexican" doesn't help your case. If you honestly forgot who that was but couldn't think of another adjective to describe them, then leave it empty and say "some poster".
