Santa Claus is Coming to Town!
November 29th 2007, 21:11 CET by Chunkstyle

And he wants you to wear his hat.  It's the happiest/suicidiest time of year again, so what are you asking for / buying others / killing yourself with?   What are your favorite / most hated Christmas songs?  Or which minor alternative holidays will you be observig instead?

That´s my phone, btw. Not the first one I linked. There were rumors the phone had an unannounced-by-HTC internal GPS antenna but that was disabled in the firmware because of incompatibily with the phone´s Bluetooh chipset, which turned out to be true. The antenna was later activated with a firmware upgrade, and works very good. The HTC site STILL doesn´t mention the GPS antenna... Also, in Asian and New Zealand/Australia markets, the phone got an official Windows Mobile 6 firmware upgrade, which is not planned to be released for Europe. Korean cocksuckers! Anyway, there are plenty homebrew WM6 roms for the device, ripped from other HTC products, plus you can circumvent the phones vendor ID check and install the NZ/AUS upgrade. I´m very happy with this phone, and can recommend it wholeheartedly.

Well forces have conspired to prevent some of my impulse purchases, so there's still stuff on my christmas list.

My Rockband deal fell through (the whole Seinfeld bit, "You know how to take the reservation, but you don't know how to *keep* the reservation, and really that's the most important part."), and my plasticlust subsided enough after reading about the guitars breaking after a few hours that I didn't feel the need to get buy it at retail.

I did end up getting a 360 though, despite my better consumer instincts. I went to Best Buy with every intention of getting the service plan for it, but as the cashier prattled on and on about the plan I couldn't bring myself to do it. I just have a natural aversion to extended warranties I guess. I did make sure I got the new and (maybe) improved 65nm version, (if you're looking for one, the easiest way to tell is the wattage of the power supply on the white sticker outside the box, 175w is yes, 203w is maybe but probably not, and 230w is no yuo) and it seems to run pretty cool and quiet so that's nice.

Oh, the biggest scam in video games is the USB Microsoft wifi adapter. Not only does it cost 100% more then the equivalent PC version (which you're purposely locked out from using), but it's for functionality that every other modern console includes for practically nothing, including the $130 DS. Luckily I could rearrange my network to deal with it, and I have a wireless bridge for my Tivo anyway, but it still baffles me how they could charge that much.

Just saw The Man From Earth. Seriously a kickass movie, completely wonderful. Wish I had seen it with someone. It's an incredibly simple, lowkey scifi story, but told with grace and care. It's about a schoolteacher that's leaving his area, and his colleagues throw a farewell-party. But it takes a turn for the unexpected when he starts talking about how he's an immortal being, 14,000 years old.

There are no flashbacks, there are no action sequences, it is a simply a movie with people talking. Highly recommended for anyone who can sit still and listen without going "boooooring!". All I need now is to go purchase the damn thing, amazon here I come.

Zeitgeist was boring and already was inaccurate within first few minutes (I've watched a few minutes back when anon linked to it).

Bender's Big Score was good. Not 10/10 good, but good. But I think that 20 minutes length is more appropriate.

I found Bender's Big Score was kinda worthless*. Beerfest was funnier and more rewarding, but all in all it's not been a day full of earthshattering movie-experiences.

* But I'm glad Futurama is back. I just didn't get a lot out of this one, it felt very uncoordinated and too fast-paced for its own good.

Best Christmas Songs:

"White Christmas", The Drifters.  I love this when it comes on the radio because my voice matches up pretty well with the deep voice guy who sings the first verse.

"White Christmas", Bing Crosby.  Same song, even better.

"Merry Fucking Christmas", Mr. Garrison. Just plain fun.

"Christmas Cookies", George Strait.  I don't like much country music, but I love this one.

"Santa Baby", Sheila E.  The best version of a great song.

"Baby, it's Cold Outside".  Doesn't matter who it's sung by.

"Blue Christmas", Elvis Presley.  Great song with sad memories from Christmas I spent away from the girl I loved.

Worst Christmas song:

"Jingle Bells", Barbara Streisand.  Man, I hate this one, it represents everything that is horrible about Barbara Streisand.  One tempo, please.  Bleh.

Bender's Big Score would have been better served as a series of four separate episodes (or chopped down a bit to remove the chaff). There were a few laugh out loud moments (chicken, grease, and salt), but the rest was really uneven. Still good, but not quite the same quality as the series.

I agree with Jibble. I really didn't get what was supposed to be "too fast-paced" - in fact, it seemed too slow for me. Series seemed more packed with jokes and action; but maybe I just couldn't wait till they kicked the alien butts, which took them hell long to do.

Best Christmas songs:

Father Christmas:  There's the original by the Kinks of course, but it's a song that manages to sound good most of the time when it's covered as well.

Anything from "James Brown's Funky Christmas" album.

Oh.

in fact, it seemed too slow for me. Series seemed more packed with jokes and action; but maybe I just couldn't wait till they kicked the alien butts, which took them hell long to do.

Well, okay, that's a good point, I also thought the jokes and action came more easily in the series. So from that perspective, yeah, the movie was too slow. I could use several paragraphs to explain what I meant with too fast-paced, but safe to say it sounds like we're all in agreement, so who really cares.
