BEST... Something Or Other... EVER!
October 24th 2007, 19:38 CEST by Hugin

Alternate title:  Troll Bait 2:  Troll Harder

Really just a place to put the kind of lazy-but-fun, list-oriented discussion that clogs up all the pop culture oriented media nowadays. Top X lists.    Yeah, they're cheap, but you can sometimes get a good classic PLanetcrap discussion/argument/trainwreck going.

Movies Starring or Costarring a Black Comedian.  Music Videos.  Cartoon Opening Sequences/Theme Songs.  Hot yet approachable seeming celebrity crushes.  Muscle/Pony cars of the 60s and 70s. Dinosaurs.  Rank them!

Biggest disappointments:

Wow! I have never played the original game, but hearing a developer puts so much effort into a game is great. Of course, they do it because it will get them more money and not because they like you. But still, compare this to how the 2K asshats released BioShock, buggy as it was, and then took four months to get some fixes out, throwing in five new tonics and abilities and that was that. But why did they leave out lots of text in the english version of Witcher? That sounds really lame...

I'm guessing their publisher rushed them. Or Didn't Agree With Their Vision, ala Stalker.
I haven't played the demo yet, but I really hope I like it - I want to support devs doing this sort of stuff, but I'm still not forking out for a game I'm not going to play.

PC BioShock did get a little better for me after the patch, but only when I uninstalled Vista and upgraded to XP it worked really fine, apart from some minor graphic glitches.

Stalker: Clear Sky

Love (the game, not the neurochemical anomaly)

The fixed version of Witcher

If you think Love's gameplay looks cool, you should see the tools the guy used to create it. Fucking unbelievable - every one is a self-enclosed work of art as well as an extremely efficient editor. There's a tiny spaceship you occasionally see floating past in the background of the modeling tool - click it and the entire screen reassembles itself as an impromptu game of asteroids. He's mad, but clearly a fucking genius. Also a lovely chap.

I don't know if a fixed Witcher would ever make it the OMGBESTRPGEVAR that some self-flagellating PC-nuts are claiming it to be. I think its underdog did it a lot of favours. Unfortunately, it was still just a dog. Even if they fixed the script and the many, many bugs/issues/design features it would still be a game with a faintly tedious first half, average combat and a noxious attitude toward sex. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Also, please stay and post more.

To be fair, wasn't that what their source material?

Personally, I really liked it. I had some complaints for sure, inventory management for one. But the story was fun, the end of the chapter was great. The boss fight being after two unskippable cut scenes was not, especially since I didn't know I wouldn't get a chance to change into my beast fighting stuff.

I stopped not long before finishing chapter two though because I figure I'll just play the super duper version in a month or two.

To be fair, find better source material! :P

From what I understand, sexual relations are completely different in the book - as in, women choose Geralt as a shag because there's a certain sexual mystique concerning Witchers. I gather Geralt doesn't consider them as conquests in the crude Gotta Catch 'Em All way that the game portrays.

TBH I haven't figured out much about what the game will be - all I gathered from the website and the article on RPS was that Eskil Steenberg seems to be one of those decidedly odd auteur types who are well worth watching. And I don't mean in a suspected-commie-spy way. And procedural generation piques my interest.

Likewise. The trading card bit I could well do without, but after Stalker I'm well up for another RPG from the east.
