Score another for iTunes. It's got maybe 90% of the stuff I'm looking for. The stuff it doesn't is usually some filler song off an album I used to own that I liked. As for books, I've been reading some of the BFI Film Classics books. These are some pretty good scholarly studies of some great films, although some of the authors are a bit too high-falutin'. I got the ones for Greed, Metropolis, and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and the one for Double Indemnity should be here tomorrow. As for films, I saw the aforementioned Double Indemnity last week and loved it. This week, I'm going to try and watch Coppola's The Conversation. I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.

Well there must be something up with my computer and/or firewall then, if you all can still use SoulSeek. Even searching for things that should return tons of results like "white stripes" (before you start typing, remember, no one cares about your opinion on the White Stripes) I'm getting nothing; I just assumed they shut down the network. Maybe you could just buy the music...you know, like a grown up. Is this some fucked up analogy, or are you actually getting holier then thou? Because the 'thou' in this case isn't in the mood to do this conversation again. Personally I'm a steal the single tracks, buy the albums, guy. Honestly I don't care if that's morally consistent or not, it's what I do and I happen to not care enough to get all PHIL101 about it. |

Regarding food, today on my lunch break I went down the road to the local farmer's market and came back with armloads of farm-fresh veggies: purple carrots, purple potatoes, sweet banana peppers, orange tomatoes, heads of lettuce of a variety I've never seen before, blueberries, peaches, and other stuff. So I took my leftover rice, dumped it in a pan with some olive oil, some white wine, and some chicken stock, then chopped up some purple carrots, an orange tomato, and a banana pepper along with some lemon basil I cut from my deck. Goddamn, it's tasty. I've always disliked tomatoes immensely. I thought I'd take a chance on these orange ones, and man, am I glad. They're sweet and awesome. And peaches, too -- I used to hate peaches, but these are super juicy and full of flavor. Farmer's markets rock. I think I'll hit the one in Redmond on Saturday and pick up a shitload of berries to preserve. Current novel word count: 26,800 words (I'm hoping by putting it here it helps motivate me)

Anyone here indulge in DVD music? I'm thinking very seriously about replacing my current collection of 2-channel stereo stuff(my favorites mostly) with DVD versions. Since getting my newest 6.1 home theater system, I've bought a few music DVD's and am amazed at how the listening experience changes in a multichannel environment. They're a tad bit more expensive than regular CD's, and by no means am I a diehard audiophile, but I'm really surprised that this hasnt taken off as the new mainstream way of listening to music at home. |

It's not morals, it's economics. if it costs you $0.99 for a song and $12 for an album, why not buy the song if that's what you're looking for? I think we're talking different things here. Generally if there is a random song I like, I'll download the song, and that will be that. If I listen to other tracks off that album or any album, and discover that I like those songs, after a certain critical mass I'll end up buying the CD. So if I'm buying the album, it's because I want the album, not just some of the songs. If I'm downloading the songs, it's because I just want the song. Adding $.99 for each of those stray songs isn't going to be cheaper...maybe more legal and in the right, but not cheaper. |

ITMS has added a feature recently whereby you can purchase the remainder of an album at a reduced price if you've already bought one or two songs off of it. I'm in the camp that says that I nick far less music now than before I started using iTunes. I actually can't remember the last time I *did* just download instead of going through ITMS. I'd do the same with movies if there was a convenient place to get them; I'd actually like the option of just renting movies because I rarely rewatch anything unless I absolutely *love* it. Being able to spend maybe €2 on a movie that I have a week to watch before it self-destructs would suit me fine. |

#31 by lwf I don't think itunes has music in my preferred bitrate yet. Exactly. I still buy the CDs and rip them at the bitrate I want. I've never purchased anything from iTubes. I've gone back to buying physical CDs due to their permanance and portability. I can play regular MP3s everywhere, but finding what I want is a pain. DRM tracks are just not portable enough. In addition, given the distaster which is plays-for-sure, I am worried that any purchased tracks will suddenly become obsolete and unplayable. |

Jibble: It does but only for EMI-published music. iTunes Plus (which is what this service is called) uses a higher bitrate and doesn't include any DRM so you can put the tracks on any iPod or device that can play M4A tracks. It costs a little extra per song ($1.29) but I think albums cost the same as standard. |

I remember that is sounded awesome and 30cents isn't really that much, but it turned out there were some strings attached, don't remember exactly what, but it was at least some kind of tracking information. (But that doesn't have to bother anyone except those stupid enough to share their bought music.) |

I'm guessing the tracking you speak off could be the information written into the ID3 tags that you're the legal owner? It was made into an issue a while back but in reality it's a more-than-harmless feature. "…a four-dimensional real vector space equipped with a nondegenerate, symmetric bilinear form."

Yes, if it's only that, I don't see problem with it, since I wouldn't share music I bought. But I remember it was something I didn't like, but don't remember... and don't really care much now. Like Bob said. |

They offer non-DRM music at $1.99 that is ripped at 256. It's not all the music though, just from certain labels. |
