The Photography Thread
July 26th 2007, 19:59 CEST by Jamie So there's three purposes for this thread. First, a few crappers are talking about getting fancy new cameras or fancy new toys for fancy existing cameras. You may have questions or want to discuss options. It's only natural. Run with it. Let it out. Second, You can talk about photographic techniques, technical or artsy. How to get this effect or that effect. Third, everybody who's not interested in either of the above can share links to their Flickr (or whatever) photostream, their public photoalbums on blogs/websites, self portaits (hrmm...), or whatever other random photographic detritus you have lying around. #24 by CheesyPoof NM, I figured it out and put up a Africa picture. Comments! Awesome. Being that close to these animals has got to be a rush. Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family

I friend'd y'all, but I use Flickr for drawings. I, like Marsh, know enough about composition that I ought to be able to take a decent picture, but I fuckin' suck. In the meantime, feel free to look at my pretty things. |
So I entered a photo contest last night after going back and forth over which picture to enter. You guys tell me: Which of these pictures most makes you think about beautiful, healthy hair like you get from using JOHNSON'S Beautiful Hair Products like JOHNSON'S BABY SHAMPOO or JOHNSON'S DETANGLING SHAMPOO or JOHNSON'S EXTRA CONDITIONING SHAMPOO? This one or this one? The grand prize for this thing is $10,000, which is "supposed" to be used as a scholarship for the kid in the picture, but pfft... They give it to you in cash. So I'm thinking new laptop. Lesser prizes are smaller cash awards and digital cameras. I'm sure there will be stiff competition, but I thought I'd enter anyway. You never know. |
The second one, not enough cute in the first. |
My new baby. Presumably the last picture I will ever take with my Olympus. |
Oh, and I vote for #2 as well. But more because her hair (and face for that matter) looks much warmer. |
beautiful camera. Way too much camera for me. I wish....I wish I could intentionally take a good picture. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."
So how do I add someone as a contact? I swear Flickr's interface was designed by my exact opposite. |
Ray, that is one cool you as a simpsons character. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."
I vote for week 140. I think the hair looks better and has more body. Both cute pics, though. |
Number 2. |
My mustache has reached epic proportions this last week, LP. The Simpsons avatar is pretty friggin' close. Sweet camera, Shadarr. |
* high five Shadarr * That's what we have. Now you can figure out how to use it and then I'll ask you questions. :P Our kit came with the 18-55mm lens and we recently got the 18-200mm lens. So far it's a great general purpose lens. I now need to learn about filters, because we sure as hell could have used some sort of polarized filter for some of the shots in Bermuda to cut down glare off the water. |
I'd opt for 2. |
LP. |
Damnit, people. I submitted the first one. I thought the composition was better (mainly because of the leading lines formed by the bridge rail receding into the background) and liked how her hair curled at the bottom and lay over one shoulder. My wife liked the second one better, too. Shadarr, which Nikon is that? |
I got the 18-200mm, because it's about the equivalent of the 28-300mm I have on my film camera, plus VR. I asked the guy if any of them have built-in macro, but apparently that's not possible with auto-focus lenses. So I guess somewhere down the road I'll have to get a macro lens. |
#43 by Shadarr So how do I add someone as a contact? I swear Flickr's interface was designed by my exact opposite. Click their name, then click "profile" then look for the "Add _____ as contact" link. Click that. Wow, that DOES sound convoluted when I write it out like that. |
D80 |
And as a side-note, there was a message from Visa fraud-alert on my answering machine when I got home. I think they called within five minutes of the charge going through. |
Shadarr, so far our experience is it's a really nice lens. Haven't experimented too much with the various VR settings and such, but we got some good shots at max zoom. Perhaps I'll even upload stuff to our group at some point! |
Also, Flickr does have a pretty stupid interface. I feel like I have to rediscover every time how to add a contact. |
This one or this one? Which ever one is Sam Week 148. I think the detail on the hair is better and showing that off better than the other one. I think the other is too soft. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
I spammed a few more pictures to the group. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
So basically it's 2 vs. everyone else on the picture voting so far. |
I don't get flickr. The picture I put up first I can't get to via the group anymore. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
Awesome! I've joined the group (and flickr come to that) and posted a few shots. |
that's an awesome 'stache, ray. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."
It'd be awesomer if you lost the beard though. |
Here's who we have in the PC Flickr Group so far: assembler Caryn Cheesypoof deadlock Ergo Gabe Jamie jjohnson Leslie Nassar LPmiller OwenButler Shadarr |
OwenButler, we had a rocket ship like that near a playground us growing up. That's was cool, back before BigToys took over the playground. Shadarr, I like the picture of the sitting seagull. It looks cold out, was it? jjohnsen, you're a dork, but I mean that in a good way (re: multiple shots of yourself blended into one). jamie, I think that you take the best shots here. I, and my wife, we just snap away, but you can see the thought you put into your shots. I've like all that I've seen. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
NO LOVE FOR LP? "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."
Well, I was going to say that your kid during Easter reminded me of Cindy Lou Who, but that didn't seem right to say. Cute as a button though. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

I have signed up! |

I've joined. Now the challenge will be to take pictures that don't suck. :( |

Huh. I was waiting to be added and then clicked on the link to reciprocate. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

#66 by CheesyPoof jjohnsen, you're a dork, but I mean that in a good way (re: multiple shots of yourself blended into one). It, along with this one were for a photography contest with the theme of clone. It was the only thing I could think of. On my family blog I put up a photo every day, so I run out of ideas all the time. To keep myself motivated I do things like enter assignments that give you a theme each week or enter a contest with a specific theme. It keeps me from being lazy and taking pictures of stuff other than my kids. I actually have an idea for another one of those shots with my daughter that I'm trying to figure out. I did one of those too. They're fun and pretty easy. Just get a tripod, take several pictures using a timer or remote control, put the pics a photoshop file as different layers, then erase the appropriate parts of the top layers sot that the ones below show through. #66 by CheesyPoof OwenButler, we had a rocket ship like that near a playground us growing up. That's was cool, back before BigToys took over the playground. I looked at that picture this morning and didn't get the joke. Then 20 minutes later while doing something else I just suddenly got it and snickered. jamie, I think that you take the best shots here. I, and my wife, we just snap away, but you can see the thought you put into your shots. I've like all that I've seen. Thanks! Again, part of it is that I just take a ton of pics and only post my favorites, though. I've got tons of plain snapshots in my archives, too. |

Allrighty, more linky link. Some of my favorite photoblogs. If found most of them on photoblogs.org, which is a stupendous destroyer of time. :photoschau Daily Dose of Imagery chromasia Random Panderings serial photographer Thinsite What The Heck Journal 2007 Picture a Day (or week) decoys like curves Thomas Hawk's Digital Connection I haven't really collected many Flickr photostreams, but I do love these two: Johnny Blood - Really sublime stuff from Wisconsin of all places Nichole Van - She does a lot of wedding and family portraits and environmental portraits. They're awesome. I really love her child photography stuff in particular. I only wish I could be that good. |
I know parents hate to hear this, but endless streams of pictures of kids kind of suck. |
So, for uploading pictures to flickr, what resolution should I use? When uploading stuff to my own server I generally just resize the files off of the camera by 25% (they are some obscene resolution / file size) with no crops whatsoever, which puts it at a nice 640x480 or there abouts. not that I have anything interesting to take pictures of, but I've got a tripod and I intend to use it! |
Shadarr, I like the picture of the sitting seagull. It looks cold out, was it? No, that was only about a month ago. The gull is merely huddling for laziness. |
I can upload some pics from a major backpacking trip last year. You never see animals going through the absurd and often horrible fooleries of magic and religions. Only man behaves with such gratuitous folly. It is the price he has to pay for being intelligent but not, as yet, intelligent enough. --Aldous Huxley

#81 by Gabe I know parents hate to hear this, but endless streams of pictures of kids kind of suck. I take your point, but of the 30 pics currently in the Flickr group, 9 of them are of kids or have kids in them. 10 if you count Cheesy's picture of the two African kids who I assume are not his --AS FAR AS HE KNOWS. But here. My "no kids" set. Well, maybe one or two. But mostly none. |
