The Photography Thread
July 26th 2007, 19:59 CEST by Jamie

So there's three purposes for this thread.

First, a few crappers are talking about getting fancy new cameras or fancy new toys for fancy existing cameras. You may have questions or want to discuss options. It's only natural. Run with it. Let it out.

Second, You can talk about photographic techniques, technical or artsy. How to get this effect or that effect.

Third, everybody who's not interested in either of the above can share links to their Flickr (or whatever) photostream, their public photoalbums on blogs/websites, self portaits (hrmm...), or whatever other random photographic detritus you have lying around.

Have you guys been watching Travels to the Edge With Art Wolfe on PBS?  It absolutely blows me away the kind of pictures he can get just with ambient light.  There was one episode where he's shooting people in a room with no lights and no flash, and yet the photos pop.  I have no idea how.

I have a cheap digital, but it's not something I'd try to take real pictures with.  I got it to take snapshots of people and events for the various websites I maintain and it's fine for that, but it's no good for anything more demanding.

I'd be totally down with that. We could post to the new PlanetCrap Flickr Group I just created!

Whoot!  I'm a Flickr addict.

Two weeks maybe?  A month seems like it would be long enough for everyone to lose interest and forget about it.

We could follow this groups lead.  You can post a photo and everyone says Planetcrap-type stuff about it.  About one in fifty is voted worthy to stay in "the vault'.

You upload the picture to your flikr account. Then you view the picture and click on the button above it, "Send to Group", and then you can pick the PC one and it'll show up there.

Apropos of this being the photography thread - my photography links:

Nice. I read several of those. Here's a few of mine:

My links tagged with \"Photography\" from ma.gnolia.com - A hodg podge of stuff I randomly come across.

DIYphotography.net - Great resource for cobbling together equipment and tools on the cheap.

Photographer Insider - Blog by Scott Kelby, an apparently accomplished Photography/Photoshop teacher and writer. Not bad if you can get past the self-promotion.

The Digital Photography Show Podcast - I listen to these guys' podcast. It's kind of annoying at times with the constant shilling for their sponsors, but the interviews are good. I also enjoy the segments where they have guest judges discuss and debate what they like/hate about the show's contest entries.

My Flickr photostream - A subset of what I post on jmadigan.net.

I'm not even sure what a "PC-themed photo" would look like, so I for one say submit anything you want. Go crazy!

As far as contests/themes/assignments go, if we get enough people interested I'm game. Someone go ahead and propose something and I'll participate.

Is that the buttery equivalent of a rice-cooker?  Because I swear to god, the only thing that could make that thing more awesome would be little robot arms to measure the rice and clean up afterward.

So I entered a photo contest last night after going back and forth over which picture to enter. You guys tell me: Which of these pictures most makes you think about beautiful, healthy hair like you get from using JOHNSON'S Beautiful Hair Products like JOHNSON'S BABY SHAMPOO or JOHNSON'S DETANGLING SHAMPOO or JOHNSON'S EXTRA CONDITIONING SHAMPOO? This one or this one?

The grand prize for this thing is $10,000, which is "supposed" to be used as a scholarship for the kid in the picture, but pfft... They give it to you in cash. So I'm thinking new laptop. Lesser prizes are smaller cash awards and digital cameras. I'm sure there will be stiff competition, but I thought I'd enter anyway. You never know.

* high five Shadarr * That's what we have. Now you can figure out how to use it and then I'll ask you questions. :P

Our kit came with the 18-55mm lens and we recently got the 18-200mm lens. So far it's a great general purpose lens. I now need to learn about filters, because we sure as hell could have used some sort of polarized filter for some of the shots in Bermuda to cut down glare off the water.

Damnit, people. I submitted the first one. I thought the composition was better (mainly because of the leading lines formed by the bridge rail receding into the background) and liked how her hair curled at the bottom and lay over one shoulder. My wife liked the second one better, too.

Shadarr, which Nikon is that?

I got the 18-200mm, because it's about the equivalent of the 28-300mm I have on my film camera, plus VR.  I asked the guy if any of them have built-in macro, but apparently that's not possible with auto-focus lenses.  So I guess somewhere down the road I'll have to get a macro lens.
