The Photography Thread
July 26th 2007, 19:59 CEST by Jamie So there's three purposes for this thread. First, a few crappers are talking about getting fancy new cameras or fancy new toys for fancy existing cameras. You may have questions or want to discuss options. It's only natural. Run with it. Let it out. Second, You can talk about photographic techniques, technical or artsy. How to get this effect or that effect. Third, everybody who's not interested in either of the above can share links to their Flickr (or whatever) photostream, their public photoalbums on blogs/websites, self portaits (hrmm...), or whatever other random photographic detritus you have lying around. Did I just say "totally down with that?" WTF? |
Shadarr, yeah that's what I'm thinking. |
Have you guys been watching Travels to the Edge With Art Wolfe on PBS? It absolutely blows me away the kind of pictures he can get just with ambient light. There was one episode where he's shooting people in a room with no lights and no flash, and yet the photos pop. I have no idea how. |
If this PC Flickr thing takes off I may have to buy a DSLR sooner than later. The thought of scanning all those pictures is daunting. |
You still don't have a real (i.e. digital) camera? "Games are not novels, and the ways in which they harbor novelistic aspirations are invariably the least interesting thing about them." - Steven Johnson
Artur (#5): Poor m0nty. Shit no, this thread is great. All you camera fags can keep your fag0rtry in one place. |
I have a cheap digital, but it's not something I'd try to take real pictures with. I got it to take snapshots of people and events for the various websites I maintain and it's fine for that, but it's no good for anything more demanding. |
As for the PC photo "contest", I think having themes open for month instead of week would be more... better. |
#9 by Jamie I'd be totally down with that. We could post to the new PlanetCrap Flickr Group I just created! Whoot! I'm a Flickr addict. Thanks for the links deadlock. Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family

Are we submitting PC-themed photos to the Flickr group, or just anything we think other PC'ers would like? Make some rules for man! Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family

#18 by assemblerer As for the PC photo "contest", I think having themes open for month instead of week would be more... better. Two weeks maybe? A month seems like it would be long enough for everyone to lose interest and forget about it. We could follow this groups lead. You can post a photo and everyone says Planetcrap-type stuff about it. About one in fifty is voted worthy to stay in "the vault'. Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family

First Post! Zep-- Save the cheerleader ... Save the world.

How do you post pictures to the group? <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
NM, I figured it out and put up a Africa picture. Comments! <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
I haven't figured it out yet, spill! |
You upload the picture to your flikr account. Then you view the picture and click on the button above it, "Send to Group", and then you can pick the PC one and it'll show up there. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
Ah, I was trying to do it from the group page. |

#8 by deadlock Apropos of this being the photography thread - my photography links: Nice. I read several of those. Here's a few of mine: My links tagged with \"Photography\" from ma.gnolia.com - A hodg podge of stuff I randomly come across. DIYphotography.net - Great resource for cobbling together equipment and tools on the cheap. Photographer Insider - Blog by Scott Kelby, an apparently accomplished Photography/Photoshop teacher and writer. Not bad if you can get past the self-promotion. The Digital Photography Show Podcast - I listen to these guys' podcast. It's kind of annoying at times with the constant shilling for their sponsors, but the interviews are good. I also enjoy the segments where they have guest judges discuss and debate what they like/hate about the show's contest entries. My Flickr photostream - A subset of what I post on jmadigan.net. #14 by Shadarr If this PC Flickr thing takes off I may have to buy a DSLR sooner than later. The thought of scanning all those pictures is daunting. You should, and then you should buy an automatic butter churner while you're at it. You know, go whole hog into the current century. ;) #20 by jjohnsen Are we submitting PC-themed photos to the Flickr group, or just anything we think other PC'ers would like? Make some rules for man! I'm not even sure what a "PC-themed photo" would look like, so I for one say submit anything you want. Go crazy! As far as contests/themes/assignments go, if we get enough people interested I'm game. Someone go ahead and propose something and I'll participate. |

You should, and then you should buy an automatic butter churner while you're at it. You know, go whole hog into the current century. ;) Is that the buttery equivalent of a rice-cooker? Because I swear to god, the only thing that could make that thing more awesome would be little robot arms to measure the rice and clean up afterward. |
what, no dpreview.com? |
I WANT MY FUCKING CANON EOS 1D MARK III. AND I WANT IT NOW!!!!!!! You need to save your money for diapers, mati. Unless you're diverting cash from your tinfoil hat fund. I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.
there, i uploaded some photos that don't suck too badly. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."
#31 by Leslie Nassar what, no dpreview.com? I don't think anyone posted it because it's the good 'ol standard everyone seems to know. I know it's always my first stop. Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family

You people need to spawn some damn boys. Seriously, is there a Y chromosome to be found among you? In other news, I got my $5000 retention bonus today ($3000 take-home) so I guess I'm going camera shopping. |
#24 by CheesyPoof NM, I figured it out and put up a Africa picture. Comments! Awesome. Being that close to these animals has got to be a rush. Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family

I friend'd y'all, but I use Flickr for drawings. I, like Marsh, know enough about composition that I ought to be able to take a decent picture, but I fuckin' suck. In the meantime, feel free to look at my pretty things. |
So I entered a photo contest last night after going back and forth over which picture to enter. You guys tell me: Which of these pictures most makes you think about beautiful, healthy hair like you get from using JOHNSON'S Beautiful Hair Products like JOHNSON'S BABY SHAMPOO or JOHNSON'S DETANGLING SHAMPOO or JOHNSON'S EXTRA CONDITIONING SHAMPOO? This one or this one? The grand prize for this thing is $10,000, which is "supposed" to be used as a scholarship for the kid in the picture, but pfft... They give it to you in cash. So I'm thinking new laptop. Lesser prizes are smaller cash awards and digital cameras. I'm sure there will be stiff competition, but I thought I'd enter anyway. You never know. |
The second one, not enough cute in the first. |
My new baby. Presumably the last picture I will ever take with my Olympus. |
Oh, and I vote for #2 as well. But more because her hair (and face for that matter) looks much warmer. |
beautiful camera. Way too much camera for me. I wish....I wish I could intentionally take a good picture. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."
So how do I add someone as a contact? I swear Flickr's interface was designed by my exact opposite. |
Ray, that is one cool you as a simpsons character. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."
I vote for week 140. I think the hair looks better and has more body. Both cute pics, though. |
Number 2. |
My mustache has reached epic proportions this last week, LP. The Simpsons avatar is pretty friggin' close. Sweet camera, Shadarr. |
* high five Shadarr * That's what we have. Now you can figure out how to use it and then I'll ask you questions. :P Our kit came with the 18-55mm lens and we recently got the 18-200mm lens. So far it's a great general purpose lens. I now need to learn about filters, because we sure as hell could have used some sort of polarized filter for some of the shots in Bermuda to cut down glare off the water. |
I'd opt for 2. |
LP. |
Damnit, people. I submitted the first one. I thought the composition was better (mainly because of the leading lines formed by the bridge rail receding into the background) and liked how her hair curled at the bottom and lay over one shoulder. My wife liked the second one better, too. Shadarr, which Nikon is that? |
I got the 18-200mm, because it's about the equivalent of the 28-300mm I have on my film camera, plus VR. I asked the guy if any of them have built-in macro, but apparently that's not possible with auto-focus lenses. So I guess somewhere down the road I'll have to get a macro lens. |
#43 by Shadarr So how do I add someone as a contact? I swear Flickr's interface was designed by my exact opposite. Click their name, then click "profile" then look for the "Add _____ as contact" link. Click that. Wow, that DOES sound convoluted when I write it out like that. |
D80 |
And as a side-note, there was a message from Visa fraud-alert on my answering machine when I got home. I think they called within five minutes of the charge going through. |
Shadarr, so far our experience is it's a really nice lens. Haven't experimented too much with the various VR settings and such, but we got some good shots at max zoom. Perhaps I'll even upload stuff to our group at some point! |
Also, Flickr does have a pretty stupid interface. I feel like I have to rediscover every time how to add a contact. |
This one or this one? Which ever one is Sam Week 148. I think the detail on the hair is better and showing that off better than the other one. I think the other is too soft. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
I spammed a few more pictures to the group. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
So basically it's 2 vs. everyone else on the picture voting so far. |
