Losing Matt Light will hurt a lot more than losing Rhodes. Adai has a full year under his belt and should be able to carry the load. Starting left tackles are a lot harder to come by. The Chargers will be an interesting team to watch. On the one hand, you should never fire a coach who went 14-2. On the other hand, all Norv has to do is not screw things up and he could win a championship Barry Switzer style. And Rivers should benefit just like Alex Smith did last year. Like I said in IRC, I'm not sold on all the "The Patriots will dominate" hype. Yeah they added Adalius Thomas and completely replaced their receiving corps, but they haven't fixed what was wrong with their defense last year, namely that they're old and slow up the middle and have trouble stopping the run. If Samuel sits out like he's threatening to do, they could have trouble stopping the pass too. I predict the Patriots defense looks more like the Seahawks of last year: they sent two linebackers to the Pro Bowl because of highlight reel plays, but they gave up a lot of yards and lost a lot of games. In the NFC... who really cares. Whoever comes out of the NFC will get embarrassed in the Super Bowl, unless it's against a six seed like the Steelers a couple years ago. My guess is that the Cowboys will slip a bit, the Saints will be better and the Bears will play more like they did at the end of the season--still good, but not blowing teams out. The Niners, Eagles and Panthers will round out the playoffs but will be even more irrelevant in the playoffs than the "top" NFC teams. |
I predict the Cardinals will play in at least 16 games this season. I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.
And the Niners are such a trendy pick this year. Did Alex Smith's hands grow this summer or something? I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.
Yeah, the NFC is pretty out of it right now in terms of competition... I remember it wasn't that long ago it was the other way around. Adai no longer has someone to relieve him...someone to share with. That's going to be a big thing, I think. Along with the starting left tackle being gone, it's going to be crazy up in there. Especially since Manning isn't as accurate (as most aren't, of course) when he's got people right up in his face. I'd like the Niners more this year if they still had Norv. He makes a really good offensive coord. I predict the Cardinals will make the playoffs this year... and the Panthers won't. My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in

It's the same thing as the Patriots. They made a splash in free agency, and the mediots love big signings because it gives them something to write about in February and March. Personally, I'm hoping that the defense will be improved by the signings of Banta-Cain (OLB) and Franklin (NT) and by replacing our old defensive coordinator (who was absolutely atrocious) with Wade Phillips' understudy in San Diego. Clement should help, but being strong up front and actually calling the right plays will help more. On offense, I think we're good enough to make the playoffs if the defense plays well. Alex Smith doesn't need to be the next Joe Montana, he just needs to complete enough passes that opposing defenses can't put eight and nine guys in the box. Ben fucking Roethlisberger won a Super Bowl, for fucks sake. |
The Niners improved a lot last year. I think it's more about Gore than Smith though. |
Losing Norv will hurt, but I don't think they need to be brilliant on offense to win games. Just line up and run behind Larry Allen. Plus, you never know what a new coach will do until you see the team play. Once upon a time, Mike Holmgren was a rookie OC. |

Tarik Glenn is the retiring left tackle. Matt Light is a Patriot. |
#3 by assemblerer And they were already so cheap to begin with! And there used to be a way to stick it to the Man. It was called rock 'n roll, but guess what, oh no, the Man ruined that, too, with a little thing called MTV!
Peter King thinks the OT that the Colts drafted will fill in nicely for Glenn. Hopefully. They are probably my favorite AFC team. |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__

Once again the Onion nails it: Barry Bonds Home-Run Scandal Somehow Becomes Feel-Good Sports Story Of Summer "Bonds is not exactly my hero," said Braves fan Bradley Hanson, who flew to San Francisco for Monday night's Braves game in order to pointedly not boo Bonds. "But he's a reminder that in these troubled times for sports, there are still players whose crimes are simple, pure, and only tarnish our beloved sport and everything it stands for without killing anybody." |

In minor 49er news, Niners pick up Bing from Raiders. The San Francisco 49ers announced Thursday that they have claimed and were awarded safety Darnell Bing off waivers from the Oakland Raiders. Bing (6-2, 220) spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve after being selected in the fourth round (101st overall pick) of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. The former University of Southern California safety saw action in all five preseason games last year before suffering a neck injury during the final contest. |

gg Raiders. |
If the guy can't even make the Raiders' roster, it truly is minor 49ers news. I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.
That gives them six safeties who have a legitimate shot to make the roster going into camp, and they'll probably only keep four. Nice. |

He's from USC, he can't be that bad. |

Dunno if anyone noticed, but the feds are likely to add new charges against Vick next month. The worse of those two news items for Vick came from Asst. U.S. Attorney Michael Gill, who told Hudson that the federal government will be filing a "superceding indictment" by the end of next month. Although legal experts can disagree on what might come in the new indictment, the federal prosecutors in Richmond typically add charges in superceding indictments. It is unlikely they will eliminate charges. The message from the government prosecutors to Vick and his three co-defendants (Purnell Peace, Quanis Phillips, and Tony Taylor) was not subtle. Here's the message: We've already charged you with serious crimes. You might want to consider a guilty plea. We are going to file more charges next month. That gives you a few weeks to think about the guilty plea. If you come and talk to us about pleading guilty and testifying for us, there will be no more charges against you. If you do not, the charges and the potential punishment will grow quickly. Although Vick is unlikely to respond to the pressure in that message, it is possible that one or two of the others could seek a lesser jail sentence, or no jail at all, in return for testifying against Vick. Each of the other three defendants -- all of whom, like Vick, also pleaded not guilty and were released on bond and given the same trial date as Vick on Thursday -- has retained private counsel separate from Vick's legal team. None of them will use a public defender. The government's revelation of the possibility of additional charges came in the second of two rapid-fire, staccato hearings conducted at the tempo of a top-of-the line marching band. U.S. Magistrate Judge Demmos Dohnal ran through the federal bail litany in what must have been record time, ordering Vick to give up his licenses for a dog kennel and for the breeding of dogs. Dohnal then released him. Less than five seconds after Dohnal had finished, Hudson walked in and continued the breakneck pace. If anyone had any doubt that Vick's celebrity might change the court's usual pace, Hudson cleared it up quickly. Lawrence Woodward, one of Vick's lawyers, argued that a speedy trial is not possible under the Richmond rules. There is no way, Woodward said, to be ready for trial on Oct. 4, which is what the rules require. He described the complexity of the charges, the need for forensic analysis of some of the dead dogs, and the multi-state nature of the charges. Hudson listened and ruled instantly, as he did on every other issue during the hearing. "Yes," Hudson said, "I will treat this case as complex litigation." And then he set it for trial on Nov. 26, about eight weeks later than the date required by normal docket rules. Woodward and the rest of Vick's legal team likely were hoping for an eight-month delay rather than an eight-week delay. It was apparent that Hudson is serious about the November date. |

Reebok to stop selling Vick jerseys. |

Oh, lawdy! |

It's going from bad to worse real quick like. on the plus side, maybe this can be the start of The Last Boy Scout and Vick will get to go on zany adventures after a couple of years of fucking his life up. My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in

I'm pretty good at knocking out bad guys with my tight spiral and saving Bruce Willis in the process! Also, giving dramatic speeches about how the league used me and worked me like a slave in the cotton fields! |

I don't know why anyone thought he'd get away from this. Only one thing is worse than torturing dogs, and that's raping babies. |
If it weren't for the jail time involved, I'd have no problem disemboweling dog torturers. |

Awesome "Why would I wanna read the book? All I'm saying is, I see a game every day. I watch baseball every day. I have a better understanding about why things happen than the computer, because the computer only tells you what you put in it. I could make that computer say what I wanted it to say, if I put the right things in there. ... The computer is only as good as what you put in it. How do you think we got Enron?"

Bill Walsh dies of leukemia. :( |
Looks like Frank Gore broke his hand in practice today, expected to be out for 4 weeks. Also sounds like Culpepper is working out with the Raiders. |
Jesus Christ, have they even put on pads yet? |
Hmm, what's the bet Gore will fumble even more this season? |
No Shadarr, it was a non-contact practice. :| |
My mistake, it was their first padded practice, but in a non-contact drill. |
m0nty- I agree. I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.
Truly, this is a red letter day. |

Man, I was looking to draft Gore too. He was a powerhouse last year. My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in

Oh, FFS, it's not even August yet. The hand will heal in time for the regular season. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

Brady to Moss... Touchdown! "Why would I wanna read the book? All I'm saying is, I see a game every day. I watch baseball every day. Yeah, I'm thinking we're going to see that a LOT this year. If the Patriots aren't dominating every team they play against this year, even with an aging defense, they need a smack. My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in

Quick scoring offenses coupled with a defense that has trouble against the run won't turn into a lot of victories, actually. |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__

It could turn into a fantasy goldmine though. |
Brady should be a fantasy power, but I don't have faith in Moss to be a clear #1 and I'm not sure who it would be out of the rest of them. Could be kind of like the Saints last season. |
Greg I got them going at least 12-4 this year, probably better than that. Mark it, date it, replay it at the end of the season. :) My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in

Do you even understand my reasoning? Scoring quickly = defense gets on the field quicker. Defense weak against the run, which means that teams will run. That takes a lot of time and beats up the defense. Thus making it easier to score. The Eagles had this problem last year until McNabb got hurt. After that they went to a slower paced offense, the defense wasn't on the field as much, and they were able to string a bunch of wins to get into the playoffs. |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__
| こんにちは | ||'|"\,__. |_..._...______===|=||_|__|...,] (@)'(@)"""*|(@)*(@)*****(@) |
Not only that, but teams that expect to score quickly can be beat by a defense that forces them to grind out the whole length of the field. The Tampa cover 2 (incidentally now run in Indy) is like that. They take away the big play and force you to throw underneath. Teams that are used to getting yardage in big chunks can have a drive die on one dropped pass when they're having to go three downs to make a first down. I'm not sure the Patriots will have that problem, though. Even though Moss isn't a possession receiver, they have some guys who can be and they have been able to run the ball in the past. However, even with a good, balanced offense they will lose a lot of games if their defense can't get off the field. |
Greg I definitely understand your reasoning, but I think you're under estimating how bad the pats defense is going to be. They haven't fully addressed the issue and I didn't heard about their last big holdout on defense yet, but I'm sure they realized the problem and tried to address it. And it's not just Moss driving their offense, as Shadarr says. They completely revamped their receiving core, which was sorely needed. I think they will be a true power house this year. Not unstoppable, undefeated season power house, but a dominating team all the same. My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in

Okay eggbert, you should be all set. Be sure to peruse the league news archive and join in on the trash talk fun. |
Was perusing the "new features for 2007" thingie on the website, this one should make everyone happy: Transactions after Thursday games - With the NFL adding more and more Thursday games, we understand the impact this has on your fantasy experience. Now, you can add/drop and trade players up until game time on Sundays even if there has been a game on Thursday or Saturday...of course those players who participated in games earlier in the week will be excluded. |
Boo. Rosters should be locked for the whole weekend after the start of the first game. I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.
