E3 is Dead! Long Live E3!
July 9th 2007, 20:04 CEST by Hugin E3 on PC, the booth babes are gone, but the sweet funk of gamer excitement remains! It this the point where PS3 begins to turn things around? Will Nintendo bring anything of real excitement to the hardcore to the table, or will it just be all casual and party games? Will Halo 3 be awesome, or super awesome? Will Killzone 2 actually live up to the debut trailer? Any titles you're looking forward to seeing? What game will be best in show, as far as you're concerned? Which company will have the best overall showing? Discuss it here! |

What are people's impressions of the MS press conference? Mine are: ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz. The good: MS clearly has a strong lineup of games for the fall/winter. Two definite buys for me, and two or three maybes. They're clearly working hard on planting the meme that 360 is the place to be for 3rd parties in particular. Seeing that band of kids doing their Halo theme thing again was fun. Good for them, I hope they got a fat check from MS. The bad: Jesus, that second marketing dude they got up to talk, the one who played the football game? Gigantic tool. The whole presentation was filled with jokes that fell flat, weak applause, boring blather about market dominance. Sometimes the silences and weak clapping were really embarrassing. I kept waiting for Peter Moore to stamp his feet and scream "SEXUAL CHOCOLATE!", then toss the Halo special edition 360 onto the floor and walk off stage. No real surprises. I was saying in IRC last night, whoever writes the patter for these things has a real tin ear for the rhythm of language and how to use it to build audience energy. MS needs to hire some stage magicians or stand up comedians or Baptist ministers or something to help them spiff up their delivery, they don't have the intrinsic, religious-esque love of say, an Apple keynote audience. |

jjohnsen (#67): And the Assasins Creed VR stuff gets more and more annoying, this latest level they showed has people blinking in and out constantly and the screen going fuzzy occasionally. Tone it down please. I've found myself ignoring all AC stuff now. Much like Bioshock, I wanted to be as surprised as possible when the game comes out. I kept waiting for Peter Moore to stamp his feet and scream "SEXUAL CHOCOLATE!", then toss the Halo special edition 360 onto the floor and walk off stage. Funniest thing I've heard in days. I saw part of it, and was pretty unimpressed. Honestly, a press conference like that isn't actually supposed to contain applause, but I guess the dynamic on that is changing. Used to be, journalists didn't want to seem biased. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

Nothing too exciting. The Halo 3 360 was a huge dud, did they really think it would be impressive? Like Hugin, I'm just amazed at how much stuff MS has coming out in the next 6 months. PS3 or Nintendo could beat them on something else, but there's no way those two have the huge amount of games being released soon. What exactly is this stuff? You're talking like we all watched/read the same thing. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

Not only was it a dud, but it's fucking hideously colored. I wouldn't let that into my house if it came with a year's subscription to free handjobs. |
|
What swag did you get, and how can I get some swag? I don't think the swag itself had to be kept supar sekrit like what I sent to him*, so the full inventory was: a Fallout 3 metal lunchbox, a Fallout 3 t-shirt with "101" on the back, a Fallout 3 Pipboy bobblehead, a Fallout 3 ring bound notebook with brushed aluminium covers, an empty bottle of Nuka Cola and, for some reason, a Life Saver (which for those who, like me, haven't had them before, are really big polos that taste of Germolene). I can supply photos of all the above (apart from the Life-Saver which I ate), should it be requested. * 2kg of grade A colombian. MP3 Of The Week: The Go! Team - Grip Like A Vice.mp3 (?)

I for one would cherish a nuka cola bottle. Full, though. |

I know you mean Fallout Boy instead of Pipboy but OMG! OMG! OMG! Am I more than you bargained for? I'm watching from the bedroom wishing to be the friction in your jeans. Isn't it messed up how I'm just dying to meet you? I'm just a notch in your bedpost but you're just a line in a song. |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__

Can you hold off on pics for a bit, Dum? I'm fairly sure I haven't broken any rules in sending you this stuff, especially since some of it has been seen already, but I'd prefer to wait till my preview goes to press anyway, just to make sure I don't wake up in the middle of the night with an NDA being pressed over my face. - words and stuff -

Nintendo's conference was amazing, as expected. Wii Zapper and Wii Balance Board and Wii Fit, Mario Galaxy in November and Smash Brothers in December and Mario Kart sometime next year. Sure, it was only Cheesy that asked for them anyway and he's been withholding Africa pictures for weeks now so a bit of turnaround will do him good. MP3 Of The Week: The Go! Team - Grip Like A Vice.mp3 (?)

What the heck is a Wii Zapper? I'd just Google it but my work blocks all gaming sites. |
|
Wii Zapper = plastic housing for both wiimote and nunchuck. I question how usefull it will be to have the nunchuck saddled into it for FPS'ers, though. :( FarCry for the Wii is underrated, btw. Lots of fun once you turn the wiimote sensitivity way up. |

Marsh, I'll send you double of whatever Dum sent you for some fallout 3 shwag. :D My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in

PR: The world used to be divided into two camps: gamers and non-gamers. In the first group: young men. In the second: everyone else. Then came Wii(TM) and Nintendo DS(TM). The remarkable Wii Remote(TM) and touch screen and voice recognition of Nintendo DS removed the barriers to entry and put video games into the hands of young women, moms, dads and grandparents. Gamers now find they have a whole new population of people willing to join them in their gaming passion. At its media briefing today at the E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica, Calif., Nintendo announced multiple new games and accessories designed to reinforce that bridge and further demonstrate everyone is a gamer. "Games like Wii Sports and the original Brain Age proved anyone can pick up a video game system and immediately have fun," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We're building on that foundation with games and accessories appealing to our current fan base and drawing in even more new players." New games and accessories not only demonstrate that Nintendo is not going to coast on its momentum, but they also show how the power and versatility of Nintendo's systems have only just begun to be explored. What might the future bring? These are the kinds of "what-if" questions firing the imaginations of consumers when Nintendo dares to explore them. For now, the following is a roundup of Nintendo's major announcements. Wii -- Wii Fit(TM): This experience builds on the active-play phenomenon started by Wii Sports(TM). It comes packed with the pressure-sensitive Wii Balance Board (name not final) that measures users' actions in fun aerobic, toning and balance activities. Wii Fit also promotes communication about health among family members, as everyone can review one another's progress on a new channel on the Wii Menu. Coming in the first half of 2008. -- Mario Kart(R) Wii (name not final): Nintendo's classic racing franchise goes online. It launches with the Wii Wheel(TM) (name not final), a steering wheel housing for the Wii Remote that lets veterans and newcomers compete together. Launches globally in early 2008. -- Super Mario Galaxy(TM): This amazing achievement by legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto inspires awe with its amazing sense of gravity and fun replayability. Launches Nov. 12. -- Wii Zapper(TM) (name not final): This unit houses both a Wii Remote and a Nunchuk(TM) and comes packaged with Nintendo software to show off its applications. Third-party developers have multiple games in the pipeline that will use this dynamic new interface. Launches 2007. -- Check Mii Out Channel (name not final): This free Wii channel builds on the phenomenon of people creating fun Mii(TM) caricatures. Now people can show off Miis they have created either on their own or for Nintendo-suggested competitions. Coming in 2007. -- Super Smash Bros.(R) Brawl: New characters, new moves and new arenas highlight this highly anticipated game, which launches Dec. 3. -- Metroid(R) Prime 3: Corruption: The precision aim of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk make this one of the best-controlled first-person games ever. Launches Aug. 27. -- Third-Party Support: Wii has nearly 100 titles in the works from every major publisher. Nintendo DS -- Brain Age(TM) 2: More Training in Minutes a Day!: This brain-training game offers more than a dozen new brain-stimulating activities that challenge the mind. Launches Aug. 20. -- The Legend of Zelda(R): Phantom Hourglass: This first Zelda game for Nintendo DS can be played with the stylus and sets a new standard for the graphics capabilities and immersive play of this system. In Japan, the game launched in late June and is selling well to both avid and casual gamers, including female players. Launches Oct. 1. -- Flash Focus(TM): Vision Training in Minutes a Day: This program is designed to help users sharpen their "Focus Power" through a series of fun activities and sports challenges that test hand-eye coordination, reaction time and peripheral vision. Launches Oct. 15. -- Third-Party Support: DS has more than 140 titles in the works from every major publisher. The "100s of titles!" line is a bit ridiculous, considering those 100s of titles will include games like World Poker Tournament. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

#92 by Ergo Jesus, talk about anal. Why the fuck do companies do this? They use 3rd party services like Websense, which just blanket bans whole swaths of the Internet for convenience. As to why they do THAT, well I think LPMiller got it. I'm more annoyed that I can't even access Gmail or any other webmail. Except, oddly, on my work-provided Blackberry, which is slow. So a few times I day I sit at my desk and load up Gmail on that. |
|
At my last job we found that if you used the secure Gmail server, https://mail.google.com, that it wasn't blocked. "Games are not novels, and the ways in which they harbor novelistic aspirations are invariably the least interesting thing about them." - Steven Johnson

Some Nintendo release dates from the press pack, as reported by Eurogamer: * Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii) - 27th August * Donkey Kong Barrel Blast (Wii) - 8th October * Battalion Wars (Wii) - 29th October * Endless Ocean (Wii) - 29th October * Fire Emblem (Wii) - 5th November * Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) - 12th November * Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) - 3rd December * Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day (DS) - 20th August * DK Jungle Climber (DS) - 10th September * The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS) - 1st October * Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol (DS) - 2nd October * Flash Focus: Vision Training in Minutes a Day (DS) - 15th October * Mario Party DS (DS) - 19th November * Nintendo Magic (working title, DS) - 26th November * Professor Layton and the Curious Village (DS) - 3rd December "Games are not novels, and the ways in which they harbor novelistic aspirations are invariably the least interesting thing about them." - Steven Johnson

Matt - If more Fallout loot comes my way between now and release it's yours. Part of me wants to keep that kind of thing, but I really have too much stuff already. - words and stuff -
|
|
Straw poll: Who would consider buying Brain Age 2? And of those, who already has Brain Age? It seems to me they kind of fulfill the same purpose. It'd be like buying two hammers. The second might be a nicer colour or a slightly better grip, but it's still a hammer. - words and stuff -
|
|
What if it had everything in Brain Age, plus a bunch more stuff? "Games are not novels, and the ways in which they harbor novelistic aspirations are invariably the least interesting thing about them." - Steven Johnson

So, basically it'll be like Super Monkey Ball 2. I'm guessing people will buy it if they're bored with all the training programs Brain Age has to offer. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

Bob - it has different stuff. All of them are functionally the same but mechanically different. Jibble - you know, that's the exact thing. I don't think it's like sequels to other games. I'll happily buy Half-Life 2 Episode Blah knowing it will provide more of the same - because HL2 provides entertainment, and my ability to consume that is endless. Brain Age provides self-improving puzzles, and though they are packaged in a more alluring manner, they are basically chores. Do I need a different flavour of chore? I don't know. - words and stuff -
|
|
I own Brain Age, but won't buy the sequel. The only thing that I could really stand was the Soduku, which was pretty good. It only took a few instances of things like saying "Blue. Blue. Blue! BLUE, YOU STUPID SON OF A BITCH!" into the microphone to turn me off most of the other games. |
|
Marsh Davies (#110): Matt - If more Fallout loot comes my way between now and release it's yours. Part of me wants to keep that kind of thing, but I really have too much stuff already. Now I just have to figure out what Dum shipped to you. :P And that's awesome, but if you want to keep it, keep it good sir. I'll get shwag in time. :) My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in

I might have bought Brain Age 2* but now that I have this, all other "puzzle" games are superfluous. It really is smashingly well put together for a cheapo title. * Actually, I still might depending on how its multiplayer turns out. |
|
I'd probably be disappointed by Brain Age 2, if I'd played 1. I found that I couldn't get into the revisions of WarioWare and Advance Wars. On the other hand I loved both iterations of Animal Crossing, so it probably depends on the game. |
