E3 is Dead! Long Live E3!
July 9th 2007, 20:04 CEST by Hugin E3 on PC, the booth babes are gone, but the sweet funk of gamer excitement remains! It this the point where PS3 begins to turn things around? Will Nintendo bring anything of real excitement to the hardcore to the table, or will it just be all casual and party games? Will Halo 3 be awesome, or super awesome? Will Killzone 2 actually live up to the debut trailer? Any titles you're looking forward to seeing? What game will be best in show, as far as you're concerned? Which company will have the best overall showing? Discuss it here! |

The rule about every 360 game being able to work without harddrive is a lie. There is at least one game out there that *requires* the harddrive, as there is no way the game could run without it. (FFXI) |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__

#37 by Matt Perkins Meh, if it leads to a lower price, that's good. If it leads to a smaller form factor like the revamed PS2, who cares? Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family

As long as they don't take away capabilities (like the revamped PS2 wasn't able to use the hard drive attachment) it'll be fine. |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__

It makes it look like Sony doesn't know what they are doing. It looks like they made a huge tactical error by completely ignoring cost when they were designing the system, and are just now realizing that consumers won't buy a $600 game machine just because it says PlayStation. It also looks like a desperation move to me, where they're cutting the price as much as they can afford to and it still won't be enough. Horrible song of the nonce: Left Behind

#40 by Greg The rule about every 360 game being able to work without harddrive is a lie. There is at least one game out there that *requires* the harddrive, as there is no way the game could run without it. (FFXI) Any other games though? Exception proving the rule and all that. I didn't follow that game at all, but I wonder if Microsoft was pissed because of Squenix's decision or if any sort of powerplay took place behind the curtains. "…a four-dimensional real vector space equipped with a nondegenerate, symmetric bilinear form."

And I was lead to believe the 80 gig PS3 is bundled with Motorstorm, so it's not "just 20 gigs for $100". "…a four-dimensional real vector space equipped with a nondegenerate, symmetric bilinear form."

No powerplay. After all, Microsoft approved it. It was initially slated for the original Xbox, but then got pushed back to the 360. |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__

All things aside, MS is way ahead of Sony in terms of presence, and I dont mean marketshare either. The things that MS are doing in the online spectrum to enhance a players experience puts it head and shoulders above what Sony is accomplishing with the PS3. MS seems to be in the position of setting the standard by which future consoles will be judged. Sony seems to be playing catch-up. |
|
#20 by jjohnsen And if Microsoft is smart they'll drop the Xbox slightly to make sure they're nowhere near Sony's price point. As long as the PS3 cost more and has a higher priced SKU available I wouldn't expect MS to drop the price. Remember they're still trying to cover the Zune launch (it's counted under the same division) and those hardware failures. I'd expect them to release the new hardware and ride for a while trying to recoup those costs until Sony hit's the $400 mark (probably by mid-summer next year). #38 by gaggle I don't think it's a conceptual problem, it only becomes a problem when the versions have basic functionality-differences (i.e. every 360 game has to work without a harddrive. Not a smart move). It wasn't a problem at all, in fact seeing what happened with the 20 gig PS3 and why it was canned I'd say it was pure genius. Sure it put some more constraints on developers but it also created a perception that lower cost SKUs where severely crippled. Sony could be in a price war with the 360 now if they still had the lower cost SKU but they sold like crap because retailers refused to carry the things (they didn't want a 360 repeat where they where stuck with a load of cores nobody wanted while premiums where selling out). As for the price drop being a desperation move, while I have no doubt they're going through with the cut because of how it's selling Sony did build in a lot of future cost cutting measures that allow for quick price drops. IBM has along said flexibility in process sizes was one of Cells design goals, hardware back-wards compatibility has long been slated for removal, and Sony tends to license out production for early runs while their own cababilities are being switched over. |

I've heard things about Spiderman 3 having some sort of horrible install program on the PS3. Honestly, if having the CrippleCore out there means that will never happen on the 360, I see it as a good thing. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

Also, FFXI is a horrible example. Everyone knows Final Fantasy fanboys would buy a new controller, video cable, hard drive, and special wireless chocobo hat if it meant they could play the next game in the series. Holding it up as an example that developers could easily require the hard drive is a pretty flimsy argument, especially if applied to majority of titles available. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

He uh, wasn't making that argument. He just said the idea that no game would require the hard drive is in fact untrue, since there is a game that requires a hard drive. When one says no game will require a hard drive, you don't get exceptions for a game just because it has a more obsessive fan base. It's binary, not multiple choice. There have been strong hints that at least one high profile multiplatform game coming in the next six months will require a hard drive. |

I don't think any one disagrees with that. And frankly, I have no problem with them requiring a hard drive. I do think they need to drop the price of the drive, since 100 bucks for 20gbs is pretty lame. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

360 Core was super dumb, but at least they were wary of the price point. PS3 price point was super super dumb. |

#56 by CheesyPoof There have been strong hints that at least one high profile multiplatform game coming in the next six months will require a hard drive. GTA? That rumor seems to be growing stronger, I bet we'll find out this week. #57 by Gabe 360 Core was super dumb, but at least they were wary of the price point. PS3 price point was super super dumb. Someone posted sales numbers for the 360 sku's over at GAF a few weeks ago. The core actually sold less than the Elite and the regular 360. I think the word got out to people, even the non-hardcore, that it was a crap purchase. The real surprise for me was that last month(or maybe May?) the Elite sold more than the regular 360. Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family

Doesn't surprise me, my brother's holding out for an Elite because of HDMI. However, at least around here you can't find an Elite anymore. It seems that just like the original launch they sold out their initial stock and then are unable to restock. Horrible song of the nonce: Left Behind
|
|
Will an elite be worth it? I figure I'll be getting my 360 for my birthday (Nov.) and a 1080p (though I don't think the 360 supports that) TV within a few months of that. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.
|
|
Depends what you mean by "worth it". My brother's reasoning is that if you're already spending over $500 including tax and accessories, you might as well shell out a little extra and get the bigger HDD and HDMI. Horrible song of the nonce: Left Behind

supports it, but that doesn't mean much. Depending on your TV, it still might look better at 720p. Or you won't notice the difference. Or you'll see a huge difference. It all gets kind of goofy. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

I want to thank MS for porting over the games I want to play so I can wait until the 360 is $150 to actually buy it. Both Viva Pinata and GOW are coming to the PC this fall. And the Assasins Creed VR stuff gets more and more annoying, this latest level they showed has people blinking in and out constantly and the screen going fuzzy occasionally. Tone it down please. Yo Marsh, The Package arrived today and I think it just elevated you to nicest man in all the lands status. The Lord of Loot, the Sultan of Swag, the Pharoh of Freebies, if you will. I actually feel kind of guilty considering all I sent you was a burned DVD and got a mountain of stuff in return. Either way, thanks for it all, I'm quite tickled. And I now know that Life Savers taste like Germolene, or like that Euthymol toothpaste that also tastes like Germolene. MP3 Of The Week: The Go! Team - Grip Like A Vice.mp3 (?)

What are people's impressions of the MS press conference? Mine are: ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz. The good: MS clearly has a strong lineup of games for the fall/winter. Two definite buys for me, and two or three maybes. They're clearly working hard on planting the meme that 360 is the place to be for 3rd parties in particular. Seeing that band of kids doing their Halo theme thing again was fun. Good for them, I hope they got a fat check from MS. The bad: Jesus, that second marketing dude they got up to talk, the one who played the football game? Gigantic tool. The whole presentation was filled with jokes that fell flat, weak applause, boring blather about market dominance. Sometimes the silences and weak clapping were really embarrassing. I kept waiting for Peter Moore to stamp his feet and scream "SEXUAL CHOCOLATE!", then toss the Halo special edition 360 onto the floor and walk off stage. No real surprises. I was saying in IRC last night, whoever writes the patter for these things has a real tin ear for the rhythm of language and how to use it to build audience energy. MS needs to hire some stage magicians or stand up comedians or Baptist ministers or something to help them spiff up their delivery, they don't have the intrinsic, religious-esque love of say, an Apple keynote audience. |

I kept waiting for Peter Moore to stamp his feet and scream "SEXUAL CHOCOLATE!", then toss the Halo special edition 360 onto the floor and walk off stage. Funniest thing I've heard in days. I saw part of it, and was pretty unimpressed. Honestly, a press conference like that isn't actually supposed to contain applause, but I guess the dynamic on that is changing. Used to be, journalists didn't want to seem biased. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

Nothing too exciting. The Halo 3 360 was a huge dud, did they really think it would be impressive? Like Hugin, I'm just amazed at how much stuff MS has coming out in the next 6 months. PS3 or Nintendo could beat them on something else, but there's no way those two have the huge amount of games being released soon. Not only was it a dud, but it's fucking hideously colored. I wouldn't let that into my house if it came with a year's subscription to free handjobs. |

What swag did you get, and how can I get some swag? I don't think the swag itself had to be kept supar sekrit like what I sent to him*, so the full inventory was: a Fallout 3 metal lunchbox, a Fallout 3 t-shirt with "101" on the back, a Fallout 3 Pipboy bobblehead, a Fallout 3 ring bound notebook with brushed aluminium covers, an empty bottle of Nuka Cola and, for some reason, a Life Saver (which for those who, like me, haven't had them before, are really big polos that taste of Germolene). I can supply photos of all the above (apart from the Life-Saver which I ate), should it be requested. * 2kg of grade A colombian. MP3 Of The Week: The Go! Team - Grip Like A Vice.mp3 (?)

I for one would cherish a nuka cola bottle. Full, though. |

Can you hold off on pics for a bit, Dum? I'm fairly sure I haven't broken any rules in sending you this stuff, especially since some of it has been seen already, but I'd prefer to wait till my preview goes to press anyway, just to make sure I don't wake up in the middle of the night with an NDA being pressed over my face. - words and stuff -

Nintendo's conference was amazing, as expected. Wii Zapper and Wii Balance Board and Wii Fit, Mario Galaxy in November and Smash Brothers in December and Mario Kart sometime next year.
