E3 is Dead!  Long Live E3!
July 9th 2007, 20:04 CEST by Hugin

E3 on PC, the booth babes are gone, but the sweet funk of gamer excitement remains!

It this the point where PS3 begins to turn things around?

Will Nintendo bring anything of real excitement to the hardcore to the table, or will it just be all casual and party games?

Will Halo 3 be awesome, or super awesome?

Will Killzone 2 actually live up to the debut trailer?

Any titles you're looking forward to seeing?

What game will be best in show, as far as you're concerned?

Which company will have the best overall showing?

Discuss it here!

You know jj, it's almost inspiring how you so urgently want to play. I don't remember last time I was that anxious to get at a game.

Wait a fucking second, it's released the 24th isn't it? Are you guys in the future?

Or is Steam actually releasing games region-like? I was so certain they did global launches, but maybe that's a per-game decision.

do you only ever read half of anything? It's the 24th for Europe, 21st for us.

Yeah, I was excited.  This is the first PC game I've bought in over 6 months.

In this case it seems I only read half, yeah. I figured Steam would magically make such silliness evaporate.

So I downloaded a couple of demos from xbox live today. Some impressions of all three:

Medal of Comapny of Honourable Heroes: The airborne thing is kind of a neat touch, but at the end of the day, it's still a medal of honor game. The upgrading weapons in the middle of a battlefield through # of kills was a little odd. Boo healthpacks! Not going to even bother renting this one.

Call of Warez Juarez: Yes, yes, I know warez is pronounced 'wares'. Reading bible quotes while unleashing holy hell and bullet-time street shootouts is a lot of fun. The platformy bits broke up the action in not a good way, and the way the character moves feels a little weird for whatever reason. Hooray rechargable health! Definate purchase for me.

Timeshift: More time manipulation goodness! Speeding up time to run across the surface of some water up to a baddie to steal his gun and shoot him in the face == love. The game just kinda throws you into things with no context as to whats going on. Yay rechargable health! Boo to the time-manipulation powers being too short. Rewinding time to run across a bridge as it unexplodes and then rexplodes behind you == more love. Definate purchase.

Call of Juarez has some real character, cool dialogue, a neat idea in the chase/pursue set-up, and a nice dual aiming trick - but it falls back on being a relentlessly dull corridor shooter for the most part, with occasionally poor and often buggy implementation - and that's not to mention Billy's stealth/platform missions which are fucking awful. Also, long load times, utterly bizarre checkpoint placement amongst other niggles. Also, also, you can't shoot horses or corpses because the developers think its immoral. If you try it, they slap your wrists with a game over. Heh.

Timeshift - still struggling to get excited about this one. The time gimmicks could be interesting, but could equally get pretty boring quickly, and there is only so much Desaturated Dumb Gritty Sci-Fi Story X With Rain that I can take. Also, the bad guy looks like a bald Jeffrey Archer.

I was looking forward to Timeshift when it was supposed to come out a full year ago, but then they went with an uber-generic art style and moved to context-sensitive time powers and I lost all interest.

Yeah, I rather liked the fruity steam punk look.

You can activate any of the three powers at any time you choose. There are certain 'puzzles' in the demo that require the use of a certain time power, but during combat you can do any of the three. I had honestly never even heard of the game before the demo, so I'd like to see some of this 'fruity steam punk' look.

There are some videos floating around of the old look. There was even a PC demo that came out about a year and a half ago, but I never played it because it was apparently pretty awful and the game got about six months of retooling after that. Then it got another twelve months of retooling and now it's facing Bioshock, Halo 3, HL2:Ep2, and a whole bunch of other shit that's going to absolutely destroy it. Pity.

If you go to IGN's gallery for it (yes, I know - sorry) you'll see a gap between April 07 and August 08 on page three - that's when the game got a makeover. Prior to that it had a much more colourful, somewhat nutbag look. Apparently the game itself was rubbish, but, still, the setting was a little bit more lively than what we have now.

The only difference I could see is that they went from using a lot of bright colours to more subdued tones. Also, don't you mean April 06 and August 07?

Although, I do like the brighter colours more than the Gears look.

So it still won't be released in August '08, eh? Also, tell me - is Fallout 3 finally out? Is it awesome or super awesome?

I don't know what was more exciting today- Coming from behind to beat the Seahawks, or winning the WNBA title.*

*Beating the Seahawks was more exciting.

I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.
