E3 is Dead! Long Live E3!
July 9th 2007, 20:04 CEST by Hugin E3 on PC, the booth babes are gone, but the sweet funk of gamer excitement remains! It this the point where PS3 begins to turn things around? Will Nintendo bring anything of real excitement to the hardcore to the table, or will it just be all casual and party games? Will Halo 3 be awesome, or super awesome? Will Killzone 2 actually live up to the debut trailer? Any titles you're looking forward to seeing? What game will be best in show, as far as you're concerned? Which company will have the best overall showing? Discuss it here! |

If you want to look cool, you'll do it. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

Sure, it was only Cheesy that asked for them anyway and he's been withholding Africa pictures for weeks now so a bit of turnaround will do him good. Hey now, you finished your blog so it's all good. I'm still working on mine. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

#92 by Ergo Jesus, talk about anal. Why the fuck do companies do this? They use 3rd party services like Websense, which just blanket bans whole swaths of the Internet for convenience. As to why they do THAT, well I think LPMiller got it. I'm more annoyed that I can't even access Gmail or any other webmail. Except, oddly, on my work-provided Blackberry, which is slow. So a few times I day I sit at my desk and load up Gmail on that. |
At my last job we found that if you used the secure Gmail server, https://mail.google.com, that it wasn't blocked. "Games are not novels, and the ways in which they harbor novelistic aspirations are invariably the least interesting thing about them." - Steven Johnson

Yep, tried that. It's blocked. |

Forever Blue coming out in the US on October 29th? Hooray! "Games are not novels, and the ways in which they harbor novelistic aspirations are invariably the least interesting thing about them." - Steven Johnson

Nothing too exciting from Nintendo, I'm not impressed. I'll buy Wii Fitness. Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family

I can understand blocking webmail, since it's a potential gateway for virused/trojaned email. You never see animals going through the absurd and often horrible fooleries of magic and religions. Only man behaves with such gratuitous folly. It is the price he has to pay for being intelligent but not, as yet, intelligent enough. --Aldous Huxley

Some Nintendo release dates from the press pack, as reported by Eurogamer: * Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii) - 27th August * Donkey Kong Barrel Blast (Wii) - 8th October * Battalion Wars (Wii) - 29th October * Endless Ocean (Wii) - 29th October * Fire Emblem (Wii) - 5th November * Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) - 12th November * Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) - 3rd December * Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day (DS) - 20th August * DK Jungle Climber (DS) - 10th September * The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS) - 1st October * Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol (DS) - 2nd October * Flash Focus: Vision Training in Minutes a Day (DS) - 15th October * Mario Party DS (DS) - 19th November * Nintendo Magic (working title, DS) - 26th November * Professor Layton and the Curious Village (DS) - 3rd December "Games are not novels, and the ways in which they harbor novelistic aspirations are invariably the least interesting thing about them." - Steven Johnson

Matt - If more Fallout loot comes my way between now and release it's yours. Part of me wants to keep that kind of thing, but I really have too much stuff already. - words and stuff -
Straw poll: Who would consider buying Brain Age 2? And of those, who already has Brain Age? It seems to me they kind of fulfill the same purpose. It'd be like buying two hammers. The second might be a nicer colour or a slightly better grip, but it's still a hammer. - words and stuff -
What if it had everything in Brain Age, plus a bunch more stuff? "Games are not novels, and the ways in which they harbor novelistic aspirations are invariably the least interesting thing about them." - Steven Johnson
So, basically it'll be like Super Monkey Ball 2. I'm guessing people will buy it if they're bored with all the training programs Brain Age has to offer. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

Bob - it has different stuff. All of them are functionally the same but mechanically different. Jibble - you know, that's the exact thing. I don't think it's like sequels to other games. I'll happily buy Half-Life 2 Episode Blah knowing it will provide more of the same - because HL2 provides entertainment, and my ability to consume that is endless. Brain Age provides self-improving puzzles, and though they are packaged in a more alluring manner, they are basically chores. Do I need a different flavour of chore? I don't know. - words and stuff -
I own Brain Age, but won't buy the sequel. The only thing that I could really stand was the Soduku, which was pretty good. It only took a few instances of things like saying "Blue. Blue. Blue! BLUE, YOU STUPID SON OF A BITCH!" into the microphone to turn me off most of the other games. |
Marsh Davies (#110): Matt - If more Fallout loot comes my way between now and release it's yours. Part of me wants to keep that kind of thing, but I really have too much stuff already. Now I just have to figure out what Dum shipped to you. :P And that's awesome, but if you want to keep it, keep it good sir. I'll get shwag in time. :) My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in

I might have bought Brain Age 2* but now that I have this, all other "puzzle" games are superfluous. It really is smashingly well put together for a cheapo title. * Actually, I still might depending on how its multiplayer turns out. |
I'd probably be disappointed by Brain Age 2, if I'd played 1. I found that I couldn't get into the revisions of WarioWare and Advance Wars. On the other hand I loved both iterations of Animal Crossing, so it probably depends on the game. |

I don't know, I've been a Wii dude from the beginning, but they still haven't given me anything other than party games that I've enjoyed. If they give it a good interface, I'd be interested in Battalion Wars. |

Fuck those twelve year old bitches on Evil Avatar, WiiFit is a goddamn game. "But I don't exist in your world!" "Then you won't feel the bullets when we shoot you."

So nothing exciting from the Sony press conference. A new, slightly lighter PSP. Woohoo? Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family

Did they officially announce the PS3 price drop? |
I liked the Home stuff and the PSN stuff. Seems like Sony gets the downloadable games market better than Microsoft does. "Games are not novels, and the ways in which they harbor novelistic aspirations are invariably the least interesting thing about them." - Steven Johnson

they all sound like very, very good things. |

sure, until it crawls on your face in the middle of the night and steals your soul. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

Seems like Sony gets the downloadable games market better than Microsoft does. That was obvious last year when that guy who made God of War was talking about putting out small, fun and original games for download rather than just repackaging old games. Now the question is whether their online system will evolve to be as good as Live. |

I'm not sure any active board posters have a PS3 yet jj (to have played Calling All Cars). From what I hear it's a very fun multiplayer game, if you can grab the people to play it with you. For single player downloadable the new hotness seems to Super Stardust HD. |
Damn them for putting one of my favourite old Amiga games on the big ugly $1000 console. PC release, plz. It isn't a Fallout game unless I use my pickpocketing skill to place a ticking dynamite bomb into the pockets of an 8 year old boy.
I've heard good things about Calling All Cars over on qt3, but the thing about small downloadable games is that they don't sell consoles. Especially not ricockulously expensive consoles without any good large games. |
Here is the [url=www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtjbqQo4geE]X-Play review of Calling All Cars. Its looks cute and fun but slight. My crummy little life

Hrm, G4 seems to be messed up. The audio is delayed about 10 seconds behind the video. Annoying, but not as annoying as listening to people talk about video games and not show any gameplay footage. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

We have a PS3, but not calling all cars, it's only like 7 bucks. Sony's broken store doesn't seem to want money from our credit card. Game most recently played: The Darkness. |

WiiFit looked a little more gamey than what I'm interested in. Basically I think Yourself!Fitness is a pretty well-rounded program, I just need to use it more (still haven't unlocked any new content, and I installed the damn thing late 2004/early 2005! Bastards) On the other hand Mario Galaxy continues to pull at me. It just looks like relaxing fun, even if it isn't story driven. Nintendo even manages to make me somewhat interested in Metroid Prime (though not enough to secure a purchase), I am oddly powerless against their magics. Have all of you seen Castle Crashers? Look here for a direct HD link. Wow that looks positively amazing! Again, no story, but four player frantic fun coop? gaggle (#139): Have all of you seen Castle Crashers? Look here for a direct HD link. Wow that looks positively amazing! Again, no story, but four player frantic fun coop? Is that Wii only? 360. Dan Paladin from Alien Hominid made it. I've chatted with him off and on and I respect his dedication to 2D. Good buy. |

Yeah 360 only. It looks fantastically charming. And it really would fit right in on the Wii, but I've no idea if that could ever happen. #140 by jjohnsen Really, it looks really similar to me. Hm. Have we not seen the same video? All I've seen so far is a guy standing on a pad and he has to lean into footballs thrown at him. Or keep hula hoops rotating. Very (very!) Wii Sports like. Which isn't bad in and of itself, just not what I was looking for. "…a four-dimensional real vector space equipped with a nondegenerate, symmetric bilinear form."

More on E3 games... Haze looks like it could be pretty cool. And Infamous...oh man, so much potential. Sure, it'll probably end up crap, but the concept and description sound so very cool. My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in

The thing about Calling All Cars is that it's a budget title and knows it - which means its pretty thin on content, but it's entertaining enough for what it is. The problem is that you can buy Mashed: Fully Loaded secondhand now for about the same price and it's a much better game of a similar ilk and has tonnes more content. Plus it looks better too. - words and stuff -

#144 by gaggle Yeah 360 only. It looks fantastically charming. Which isn't bad in and of itself, just not what I was looking for. Maybe we haven't seen the same video. The one I saw showed the Wii Sports type stuff, and also showed a person figuring out their BMI, doing push-ups and jumping jacks, and doing different yoga positions. Okay JJ, I've now seen a better trailer, and I'm so buying it when it comes out. It's still more game-ish in its presentation than I was looking for, but fuck that, it measures BMI and stuff and shows progress-charts and that's plenty good for me. Really, the big reason I'm suddenly so interested is because I just realized Wii Fit will work without jumping on the floor. Right? I don't think you'll be asked to jump all over that little pad. I can't jump around in my apartment very well, and unfortunately Yourself!Fitness requires that a lot. "…a four-dimensional real vector space equipped with a nondegenerate, symmetric bilinear form."
Yeah, it looks like just basic leaning and balancing is a large part of it. It really seems like something that could become part of a fitness plan, which is why my wife and I loved Yourself Fitness so much. Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family
