That's not entirely the reason he left.  That was the final straw, yes, but he left primarily because he was tired of debating the same shit over and over and over again.

So what? We had a new debate about vegetarianism in which most people disagreed with him* and he decided to leave? I imagine that he took his virtual football home with him. Anyway, there's no conch; you don't need permission from the Speaker of the House before you start talking about something. If PlanetCrap is stagnant it's not because we debate the same shit over and over, it's because people keep leaving forever and the pool of pet topics is getting smaller and smaller.

Oops:

*I wouldn't mind but it wasn't a particularly fierce debate. If I recall, Px declared that vegetarianism is The One True Ethical and Moral Way, got all pissed off because people disagreed with him and left forever.

I don't. Fucking leaving forever because people disagreed with his militant vegeterianism. Gobshite.

Re: Px

Maybe he did leave because the 'Crap was stale but I remember him coming relatively late to the game after people had already started complaining it was past its prime.  I can't see him missing the days of thousands a posts a day or having your posts about Scott Miller responded to because I don't think he was here around those times.  I could be wrong.

Maybe that was the reason, though, or maybe he was really, really busy as some have said.  The fact is that he got into this really weird argument about Veganism, got on a really high horse and then rode off saying 'never again' and as far as I'm concerned, that was the weakest Planetcrap exit ever.

BTW, Frets on Fire is a fucking awesome game! I downloaded all the Guitar Hero 1 and 2 tracks for it and it just simply rocks my socks now. The only thing is my keyboard sucks (it's a PS/2 POS) and I looked around on hardware store websites for a USB replacement but haven't found anything really suitable layout-wise.

Maybe a PS/2->USB converter would be the best idea as this keyboard has a fine grip, it's just that it's slow and you can't press too many keys at once.

I just got back from the Daft Punk concert in Amsterdam. Ho-ly fu-cking shit that was fucking genius. It was the exact same set from last year when they played at Coachella and in Belgium, which is too bad but was to be expected. They did have a 15-20 minute encore at the end with some stuff I'd never heard before.

Really glad I went there and got to see them.

deadlock,

my point is, Px changed quite a bit before bailing out entirely - and not for the better, either. Maybe it was the sudden fame, maybe the 'not drinking so much anymore', maybe something entirely else - I don't know OR care.

Px is a busy guy, and he's gone through some big changes that have made him even busier. I'm pretty sure that's the reason he couldn't be bothered to re-hash debate #3303 regarding the merits of vegetarianism.

I'm pretty it isn't or it isn't the only reason though I know it was probably a large contributor. He'd been posting less anyway. I reallly like Px - I think it's a shame that he left 'forever' over a stupid debate that was second only to religion in terms of pointlessness and being unwinnable for either side of the debate. I suppose I was always convinced that if Px ever left for good it would be because the rest of the world was a desolate nuclear waste and he'd gotten bored waiting for a thread to be updated by someone else.

This is probably the real reason he left. MOST people change a lot in their 20's. Just from the beginning of the time he got here to the time he left, he changed a lot.

This is pretty much how I feel about the whole thing. I liked Px a lot. Different circumstances growing up and I could have been pretty similar to him. I think it's crappy that he left on a such a sour note on such a silly debate. I realize it was important to him, but militant vegetarianism? What a way to go.

I got 116k on TWIBMPG (on easy). That's an awesome song. Haven't played medium yet, I'll go do that in a minute. The other stock songs I think I got good scores on too (around 100k) but they're kind of boring.

Now I've got that all-in-one mod pack running with the Guitar Hero II songs and it just rocks so goddamn much now.

Now all we need is a server!

I'm thinking about it from a modification aspect. I had this big client side plan for ET involving zombies and other fun things but I demanded custom colors and the Q3 engine had a few things hard-coded into it back then so I never got around to doing anything with it.

If they're using Doom 3 / Quake 4 I can probably bring that concept back since most of the lighting effects are set through text-editable files, and that won't be an issue.

Hmm - I had a crack at TWIBMPG on easy, and it got me up to 96k from the previous record of 65k. Strange, considering that was a few months back and I hardly ever played it in between (and never on easy).

You don't know by chance know a good place to buy a server on that you can pick which game, configure it, etc? I'm looking for a cheap place to be able to host my own game server cheaply...something I can have as much control over as possible. I don't have a big enough pipe to do at my house.

I generally find the easy modes more fun because, well... they're easier and you don't run into the limitations of holding a PS/2 keyboard instead of a guitar controller as often as on medium.

Damn, I just got nearly 200k on Lynyrd Skynrd - Free Bird (from GH2), but that song's like 10 minutes long or so. Great to play.

Remove the word "cheap" from your query and there are probably a few dozen places that can take care of you.

Last time I cared enough to check, EA was renting 1942 servers at something like 8$ a player slot, per month.

And the local ISP laughed at me when I went to talk to them about maybe doing something, so, yeah.

So the news giant that is news.com.au, has this story up on its page...

Astonishing new twist

But last week came an astonishing new twist to the Roswell mystery.

Lieutenant Walter Haut was the public relations officer at the base in 1947 and was the man who issued the original and subsequent press releases after the crash on the orders of the base commander, Colonel William Blanchard.

Haut died last year but left a sworn affidavit to be opened only after his death.

Last week, the text was released and asserts that the weather balloon claim was a cover story and that the real object had been recovered by the military and stored in a hangar.

He described seeing not just the craft, but alien bodies.

He wasn't the first Roswell witness to talk about alien bodies.

So far, as the qt3 thread mentions, I don't see anything about it anywhere else.

Me, I'd love to believe that is was aliens and the truth will come out. But while I hope, I just don't believe it. Not that aliens exist and could potentially crash here on earth...but the story could have been covered up for this long if it were true.

Some really interesting cell phone news:

Here’s the basic idea. If you’re willing to pay $10 a month on top of a regular T-Mobile voice plan, you get a special cellphone. When you’re out and about, it works like any other phone; calls eat up your monthly minutes as usual.

But when it’s in a Wi-Fi wireless Internet hot spot, this phone offers a huge bargain: all your calls are free. You use it and dial it the same as always — you still get call hold, caller ID, three-way calling and all the other features — but now your voice is carried by the Internet rather than the cellular airwaves.

From the description in that article I don't know I'd use it now (specific cell phone required, doesn't work at login required hot spots, etc), but it sounds really interesting. Especially if it catches on. It'll mean more hotspots and maybe support by phones, etc.

My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in
