We're down to two possibilities again: 1) He lied to Congress. 2) He's incompetent and didn't read the reports. I honestly don't think he lied. So I guess the DC Madam released all her old phone records on the web. Going to be interesting to watch all the political blog followers try in vain to match phone numbers to politicians. I'm guessing most of them would use unlisted numbers, and hence improbable to trace back unless you're a phone company employee. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? #67 by deadlock jjohnsen: I'd like to give a shout out for the Pentax range - the K10D is supposed to be a fine piece of kit. Pentax aren't as popular as Nikon and Canon but the K10D (and the older ist* models) have the Pentax KAF lense mount. What this means is that you have access to absolutely loads of Pentax K-mount lenses. I'll take a look. The main reason I was looking at the D40 was everyone that has one seems to be in love, and my Dad has been using Nikon's forever and swears by them. But I'm willing to give anything a shot at the price point of the D40. Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. For Africa we got the Panasonic Lumix FZ8. We toyed with the idea of an SLR, but being that we're not camera nerds thought it would have been too much. Given that the FZ8 can feel like a bit much at times, an SLR would have been overkill. Maybe if/when we get comfortable with all of the FZ8 features (it supports that RAW mode to help us get into the 5th circile of camera nerdom) we'll move to an SLR. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

I never put too much stock in people who love the only version of a product that they've ever owned. If they hate it, that tells me something, but if they love it it might just mean they don't now what they're missing. However, according to consumer reports the D200 is still the king of prosumer DSLRs, with the D80 and Canon equivilent slightly behind and the K10D and D40 rounding out the top 5. Nice shots, jjohnsen, Shadarr, and Hugin. If you want to see any of mine you can look at my blog or on my Flickr photostream. Look at the Photo of the Week stuff if you don't want to see a hoojillion pics of my kids. #54 by jjohnsen I starting to find that as well. I told my wife I needed a break from finals, so she told me to take off and do whatever I wanted. Instead of playing Overlord, I grabbed my camera. Two years ago that never would have happened. I've noticed a steady improvement in your pics from checking in on your blog over the last several months. Especially when you shoot something staged and/or creative instead of the family (though, of course, those subjects are required shooting, too). |

Aside from the ability to swap lenses, the sorts of things you can do with an SLR that you can't do with a PHD camera are not going to help you take better snapshots. Really, the only reason to get an SLR is if you find yourself thinking "I wish my current camera let me _____." The main one being manual exposure control. Horrible song of the nonce: Left Behind

Hard to imagine the D80 is doing something egregious compared to the competitor's equivalent, though. There's not much point getting an SLR if you're not going to learn how to use it. Don't fully agree. Even before learning more about how to use it, just for point and shoot pictures it was obvious the optics were vastly superior. |

It further helps to have the subject stand farther away from the background or foreground, and to zoom in with a longer focal length. But I doubt you'll get extremely shallow depth of field shots like this or this or this with most P&S cameras. |

Gabe, I should've quoted, I posted in reply to jjeremy and didn't see yours. Is the optics quality a result of it being an SLR, or just the fact that you get what you pay for? You can get some of that with a P&S by switching to "portrait mode" (or something similar). My Nikon has a bunch of crap like that, and my crappy Olympus digital probably does too, but I find it very frustrating to try to learn camera-specific features like that. Even just remembering what the little picture of a flower means is beyond me. I pretty much just use aperture priority mode, even when what I really want to change is the shutter speed. Nonsense, on my camera if you set it to auto focus/auto aperture/auto flash/matrix metering it behaves exactly like a PHD camera. It just lets you do more when you want to do more. Is the optics quality a result of it being an SLR, or just the fact that you get what you pay for? You probably can't disentangle that, right? No point in dumping $500 into the optics on a fixed lens point and shoot system. |

He has this amazing ability to make even the most staged shot look totally natural. #103 by Jibble I don't even know what the hell you're talking about. Cameras are one of the few things I haven't geeked the hell out on, mostly because they're godawfully expensive as a habit. I'm sure I could learn all that stuff, but I just can't muster up the attention span to bother with it right now. Polarizers are a kind of filter (little pieces of glass you screw on to the front of your lens) that reduce glare from glass, water, or other reflective surfaces. They also slightly increase the saturation of colors. And yes, photography can be a monstrously expensive hobby. There's always more stuff to buy, even after you get a good camera/lens setup. I'm done buying lenses for a while, but there's still no shortage of accessories. jj, thanks. It's not so much skill as it is taking LOTS and LOTS of pictures and then sorting through them to find the few good ones. This is the beauty of digital photography. Or, put another way: It's easy to take a picture that's one in a million. First, take 999,999 pictures. Then take just one more. |

This reminds me of another advantage of SLRs over point & shoots: speed. You can just hold down the shutter release button and (if you're not using a flash) take several pics per second. My camera does up to 3 per second, and the top of the line Canon 1D takes an absurd 10 shots per second. When my kid is doing something I want to get a shot of, I'll often just hold down the button and end up with 10-20 nearly identical shots within a few seconds. I just pick the best one or two and delete the rest. Or do something like this. |

Can't be emphasized enough. Take lots and lots of pictures. Some of them are going to be good and digital makes the process relatively painless. This is why I'm thinking of getting a DSLR sooner rather than later. When I was just using it to take the odd snapshot, I was only going through a few rolls a year. But to get those flower photos I blew through an entire roll, which means those two photos cost me $12. Do that 100 times and I'm at the price of a D80. Plus, instant feedback would really speed up the learning process. The nighttime pictures I took totally didn't work (although it's kind of amazing to see a picture you know you took at midnight that looks like late afternoon), with an LCD on the camera I could've made adjustments right then and eventually gotten the picture I wanted. the optics are better to a point, but high end SLRs like the Panasonic Fz7/8, the Fujitsus, and some from canon and nikon actually have really nice optics to begin with. The other reason for the quality has to do with the CCD being used. The ones in a DSLR are higher quality, and really what you are paying for is the better CCD and the option to change the optics out. Those 4 makers put out really nice "almost" SLRs that are good starting points for people interested in DSLRs but afraid of all the lenses and that they won't take pictures worthy of the camera. Master those, and you'll have no trouble with the higher end cameras. But there is not as near a large difference as their used to be between the two types of cameras in terms of plain "what comes in the box" optics anymore, at least not with the higher quality cameras. It was much more laid back than search and rescue, they basically just send out an email and then whoever shows up on Saturday gets put to work. There is no training and no real application process.
