Things I don't care about
July 9th 2007, 19:55 CEST by lwf Here is a place for all of you to talk about WoW, Magic, LOTRO, C+, C#, Visual Basic, Pointers, Gardening, Astrology, MeyersBriggs, Gaggle vs. Joker, and Jibble's kinks. |

Is the optics quality a result of it being an SLR, or just the fact that you get what you pay for? You probably can't disentangle that, right? No point in dumping $500 into the optics on a fixed lens point and shoot system. |
|
#96 by Jibble Also, Jamie, that's an awesome shot of your daughter. That's a groundhog. Oh, wait, the one with the donut. Right. Thanks! |
|
Those first two shots would've benefited from a polarizer to take the glare off the glass. I don't even know what the hell you're talking about. Cameras are one of the few things I haven't geeked the hell out on, mostly because they're godawfully expensive as a habit. I'm sure I could learn all that stuff, but I just can't muster up the attention span to bother with it right now. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

#96 by Jibble Also, Jamie, that's an awesome shot of your daughter. Jamie takes some of the best portrait/kid's shots I've seen. He has this amazing ability to make even the most staged shot look totally natural. The only reason I found out he setts some of the shots of his daughter up, is I asked him what he bribed her with to become the perfect model. #90 by Shadarr We toyed with the idea of an SLR, but being that we're not camera nerds thought it would have been too much. There's not much point getting an SLR if you're not going to learn how to use it. Aside from the ability to swap lenses, the sorts of things you can do with an SLR that you can't do with a PHD camera are not going to help you take better snapshots. Really, the only reason to get an SLR is if you find yourself thinking "I wish my current camera let me _____." The main one being manual exposure control. I totally agree. I want the DSLR for better optics as well as more control (and RAW). Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family

#103 by Jibble I don't even know what the hell you're talking about. Cameras are one of the few things I haven't geeked the hell out on, mostly because they're godawfully expensive as a habit. I'm sure I could learn all that stuff, but I just can't muster up the attention span to bother with it right now. Polarizers are a kind of filter (little pieces of glass you screw on to the front of your lens) that reduce glare from glass, water, or other reflective surfaces. They also slightly increase the saturation of colors. And yes, photography can be a monstrously expensive hobby. There's always more stuff to buy, even after you get a good camera/lens setup. I'm done buying lenses for a while, but there's still no shortage of accessories. jj, thanks. It's not so much skill as it is taking LOTS and LOTS of pictures and then sorting through them to find the few good ones. This is the beauty of digital photography. Or, put another way: It's easy to take a picture that's one in a million. First, take 999,999 pictures. Then take just one more. |
|
it is taking LOTS and LOTS of pictures and then sorting through them to find the few good ones. This is the beauty of digital photography Can't be emphasized enough. Take lots and lots of pictures. Some of them are going to be good and digital makes the process relatively painless. |
|
This reminds me of another advantage of SLRs over point & shoots: speed. You can just hold down the shutter release button and (if you're not using a flash) take several pics per second. My camera does up to 3 per second, and the top of the line Canon 1D takes an absurd 10 shots per second. When my kid is doing something I want to get a shot of, I'll often just hold down the button and end up with 10-20 nearly identical shots within a few seconds. I just pick the best one or two and delete the rest. Or do something like this. |
|
The FZ8 does that quick shutter stuff. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

Can't be emphasized enough. Take lots and lots of pictures. Some of them are going to be good and digital makes the process relatively painless. This is why I'm thinking of getting a DSLR sooner rather than later. When I was just using it to take the odd snapshot, I was only going through a few rolls a year. But to get those flower photos I blew through an entire roll, which means those two photos cost me $12. Do that 100 times and I'm at the price of a D80. Plus, instant feedback would really speed up the learning process. The nighttime pictures I took totally didn't work (although it's kind of amazing to see a picture you know you took at midnight that looks like late afternoon), with an LCD on the camera I could've made adjustments right then and eventually gotten the picture I wanted. Yeah, I generally take dozens of photos of the same subject to sort through later. Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

the optics are better to a point, but high end SLRs like the Panasonic Fz7/8, the Fujitsus, and some from canon and nikon actually have really nice optics to begin with. The other reason for the quality has to do with the CCD being used. The ones in a DSLR are higher quality, and really what you are paying for is the better CCD and the option to change the optics out. Those 4 makers put out really nice "almost" SLRs that are good starting points for people interested in DSLRs but afraid of all the lenses and that they won't take pictures worthy of the camera. Master those, and you'll have no trouble with the higher end cameras. But there is not as near a large difference as their used to be between the two types of cameras in terms of plain "what comes in the box" optics anymore, at least not with the higher quality cameras. The FZ8 does that quick shutter stuff. Yeah it does, but believe me, you only think it's fast till you get a d80 in your hands and find out that while the FZ8 is plenty fast for an SLR, it's nothing on a DSLR. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

Yeah it does, but believe me, you only think it's fast till you get a d80 in your hands and find out that while the FZ8 is plenty fast for an SLR, it's nothing on a DSLR. What do you mean when you say SLR? The D in DSLR stands for digital, so if the FZ8 is an SLR it's by definition a DSLR. Horrible song of the nonce: Left Behind

I've got a Panasonic FZ30 and Canon 400D (Rebel XTi) in front of me. Here are a couple of quick shots for comparison (bland subject matter -- my desk); Panasonic FZ30 Canon 400D |

i'm sorry, I mean single lense versus lense swapping cameras. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

My flash kit arrived today, except there was no flash in it. So now I have everything I need to set up an external flash except the flash itself. Talk about a letdown. Horrible song of the nonce: Left Behind

Shadarr said in #25: This weekend I did some caulking and painting for Habitat for Humanity. It was much more laid back than search and rescue, they basically just send out an email and then whoever shows up on Saturday gets put to work. There is no training and no real application process. Just out of curiosity, why do you engage in so many charitable activities? Is it boredom, moral obligation, peer pressure, habit, altruism, the social aspect, etc.? |

It would be you, who would ask that question. |

#76 by Jibble So I guess the DC Madam released all her old phone records on the web. Going to be interesting to watch all the political blog followers try in vain to match phone numbers to politicians. I'm guessing most of them would use unlisted numbers, and hence improbable to trace back unless you're a phone company employee. Not all of them. Let's all point and laugh! Thank Morn he's a Republican. And there used to be a way to stick it to the Man. It was called rock 'n roll, but guess what, oh no, the Man ruined that, too, with a little thing called MTV!

Apparently he dealt with this 3 years ago, when he was found to be seeing a prostitute. Family values, hates homosexuals, yes. Anti-abortion, dunno, he was after all, supporting Guiliani (and for some reason I thought he was not anti-abortion). |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__

Some are playing the "liberals don't need whores because they get their strange at home" card, but that's some pretty serious bullshit right there. People from all walks of life (and political inclinations) are on that list. It's just a matter of time before someone finds it. This seems like one of those things that needs a collaborative database set up so people can turn those phone record scans into a searchable list of phone numbers. Such a thing would be open to fraud, sure, but you could always display the original scan alongside the searched phone number for fact checking purposes. Hmmmmm... Lady, people aren't chocolates. But you know what they are, mostly? Bastards. Bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling.

Apparently he was pretty inflammatory about impeaching Clinton back in '98 ("morally unfit to govern", were his words). He's also being accused (no evidence has been presented so far) by another Madam of visiting a brothel in New Orleans. Yes, Vitter is pro-life. Lady, people aren't chocolates. Charitable work makes me feel good, I like helping people. Or maybe I'm fooling myself. Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family

I don't care that much about helping people. I like doing different things, and since I don't care that much about money volunteering lets me do that without all the overhead of trying to get paid for it. Especially dealing with clients. The couple times I've been asked to do web work for money (so I didn't even have to advertise or do any sales-type things) it was still very frustrating. Other things like search and rescue and construction, I don't think it would even be possible to get paid for it since I already have a 9-5 job. Horrible song of the nonce: Left Behind

I like helping people. I got drunk and have a black gap, for which I'll be questioned by police tomorrow. My brother has bought a Panasonic LZ7, which is well... it takes photos. But I miss all the manual work that makes taking photos tricky. |

Thanks to Funk I now know about two incredible foods for which I'll probably have to return to New York. Korean fried chicken, and Korean frozen yogurt from Pinkberry's (which I discovered while researching the chicken). Anyone had these? I know they are pretty big on teh West Coast. "But I don't exist in your world!" "Then you won't feel the bullets when we shoot you."

Can't be too big on the West coast. I'm kind of a food fanatic and I've never heard of either. You never see animals going through the absurd and often horrible fooleries of magic and religions. Only man behaves with such gratuitous folly. It is the price he has to pay for being intelligent but not, as yet, intelligent enough. --Aldous Huxley

Back to photography and DSLRs for a second, this article entitled \"Digital S.L.R.’s That Let You Shoot Like a Pro\" on the New York Times website provides a nice comparison between the Canon Digital Rebel XTi, the Nikon D40X, the Pentax 10D, the Olympus E510 and the Sony Alpha. I'd still recommend new buyers go with the Canon Rebel XT(i) or the Nikon D40, but they have some nice things to say about the other ones, too. |
