morn needs ur help kthx
April 9th 2007, 23:16 CEST by Morn I've writting a new toy, and I need some testers before it fully launches. It's a lot like PlanetCrap, except instead of user-submitted topics you have user-submitted multiple-choice questions. Once you start marking your replies, the site will match you with other users, giving you a list of your best matches. Behold ZOMGRLY! There's still a lot of stuff that needs to be done, most significantly a messaging system, copywriting, and a big load of polish. If you encounter any major (or minor) problems, please let me know! (Oh, and please don't use IE6, the colors will be all wrong. Good thing it's just the colors. Mmm.) |

Sorry to hear about your accident PX. If the parents knowingly violated the regs concerning the use of the rental, they should be held accountable wether they have insurance or not. Then again, hard to get blood from a stone. Hope you make out okay and that you won't require surgery. |

Then again, hard to get blood from a stone. Hope you make out okay and that you won't require surgery. But you can keep squeezing the blood out of the stone over a prolonged period of time. So Dick van Dyke, Rod Stewart, Don Johnson and Peter O'Toole walk into a bar...

It may be hard to get money out of poor people, but it's surprisingly easy to get blood. But I'm sure Px already knows that. Even I know what crossing the Rubicon means, and I know fuck all about American history. -m0nty

And re: the topic, it needs unread comment tracking. Oh, and when adding a new question there's a doodad for displaying the description box, which is fine, but if you've got one link to show it then there should be one to hide it again. Comment preview might be handy too... as might formatting help text. MP3 Of The Week: The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds.mp3 (?)

Comment tracking: it's coming, I'm just somewhat undecided how to tackle it this time. Formatting help: it's coming. Preview: dunno yet. Since you can edit your comments for 30 minutes after posting them, it might not be as necessary. Who runs this place?!

|
Chris: Why do you think that? I don't think that 30 minute editing would be open to that much abuse given that, for a site with next to no moderation, PC regulars are actually quite well-behaved. |
|
Except when they were flaming me of course |
|
30 seconds I think could be useful, if there has to be a feature of this sort. 30 minutes will take away from the hardcore edge of this forum. It's not that I think PC will implode or suffer horribly, but as a currently happy user I don't mind (infact I like) that PC is so.. so.. unforgiving. I guess. #94 by Morn Comment tracking: it's coming, I'm just somewhat undecided how to tackle it this time. Preview: dunno yet. Since you can edit your comments for 30 minutes after posting them, it might not be as necessary. My idea, probably quite imperfect: since session expires with closing the browser, I'd look for unread posts upon logging in and unmark them while reading. Preview/editing: 30 minutes edit time would be killer on Crap. 2-5 minutes at max, for typos. And big red "EDITED" flag. Feature requests: - Pagination. - rethink submission system. As number of users will grow, queued topics will be promoted in blink of an eye. And, unless I've missed something, eventually ALL questions make it to front page, so we can't talk about any real community-driven moderation, all it takes is 10 trolls to promote a topic. - checkbox that would allow vote results publicly. - guestbook (comments) for users and for user photos. |
|
editing; if people need it, let them turn on some kind of delay-to-post feature that embargos their post from public viewing for 30 seconds or whatever. if they see the post has an error, they can fix it. |
|
Editing will ruin this place. If you must have it, limit it to 2 minutes or something. 30 is more than enough time to have someone reply and then have the original post changed under their feet. I Have A Cool Idea For A Game - Made Up Sports

EDITED flags are meaningless and stupid without context. |

i agree with warren. |

Except when they were flaming me of course Bah. You were handled with kid gloves compared to most incidents. A really cool implementation would be to let people edit their posts and display the edited version by default, but track the changes and have a "show original post" link for anything that's been edited. Even I know what crossing the Rubicon means, and I know fuck all about American history. -m0nty

planetwiki? |

M0rn can't update the code with all kind of fancy features because we don't want any of them. That's gotta be an interesting situation... We're an ingrained bitter community who's alienated our creator. Sort of like the real world. "there are times when newspapers must be rolled and then vigorously applied." - PA

Well, except searching. But Jibble's handled that reasonably well I suppose. We had that PlanetCrap 7.0 thread once, I'm sure it can be mined for all kinds of ideas. "there are times when newspapers must be rolled and then vigorously applied." - PA

Yeah, I thought about revision control too, but I think it would be useless in the end, since it would be fun for first 2 hours for trolls to say something and then change their posts to something else; since everyone would check the revisions and ignore them anyway. Most folks would use it just to rephrase or spellcheckfix themselves. Complete revision tracking would transform linear posting into 3D maze. So I think Warren's solution is the best. Kind of a forced preview for those who want it. |

I SAY WE NEED MORE ADS! |
|
#107 by Leslie Nassar EDITED flags are meaningless and stupid without context. And what about edited flags with date and time? |
|
We should also have ignore and sub-threads! |
|
I'm still in favor of primiarly updating the shit out of the front-end, to something more dynamic. With new posts fading in as they're added, an ignore feature that collapses (but doesn't remove) posts from certain users, a more advanced input field (inline previewing, spellchecking, hotkeys for italics, etc.). If qw really want that community feel going there's a whole range of options re: tags posts with keywords and modding them up or down for usefulness. None of it is really required though, we love PC as it is m0rn :) "there are times when newspapers must be rolled and then vigorously applied." - PA

I'd like to see planetcrap users submit more topics. Something I was thinking about a few years is if whoever of us is interested just go out into the world and advertise ourselves as the journalists of planetcrap.com, as if the site is some kind of business or publication. Basically it would be fraud for fun and profit. "Hi my name is lwf, I'm from online mega-zeitgeist-mag planetcrap.com, I'm wondering if Ms. Coulter would be interested in giving an interview? You can check all my credentials with our HR manager Jjohnsen." |
|

Allow people to fix typos and what not while preventing the fuckos from posting something offensive and then retroactively changing it to something innocuous. #124 by Shadarr That's kind of the whole point. Allow people to fix typos and what not while preventing the fuckos from posting something offensive and then retroactively changing it to something innocuous. You're a genius! This way, trolls will troll, but then change the posts to non-troll, so everyone will be happy! Heh. I'd like to see the demo. #120 by Leslie Nassar does the date and time provide context? still meaningless, still stupid. What context do you need? Log file to each change, like "I changed my opinion on this when X posted link to Y."? Date and time is all you need. If time of post is X and time of edit is X+20 seconds, we know that it was edited most probably before anyone could reply. If editing would have to be allowed for longer than 2 minutes then the only way to add context is revision tracking. Or some crazy stuff, like threaded board, which sucks. |
