morn needs ur help kthx
April 9th 2007, 23:16 CEST by Morn

I've writting a new toy, and I need some testers before it fully launches. It's a lot like PlanetCrap, except instead of user-submitted topics you have user-submitted multiple-choice questions. Once you start marking your replies, the site will match you with other users, giving you a list of your best matches.

Behold ZOMGRLY!

There's still a lot of stuff that needs to be done, most significantly a messaging system, copywriting, and a big load of polish. If you encounter any major (or minor) problems, please let me know! (Oh, and please don't use IE6, the colors will be all wrong. Good thing it's just the colors. Mmm.)

Px, here's your $126.34 from the settlement.

Geez, m0nty, you gotta sue the people that have the money. In this case the insurance companies and/or the rental car company.

Good to hear, px. I hope it all works out. That's some pretty shitty shit. But, on the plus side, it's a something that should be fixable instead of something worse.

Sorry to hear about your accident PX. If the parents knowingly violated the regs concerning the use of the rental, they should be held accountable wether they have insurance or not. Then again, hard to get blood from a stone. Hope you make out okay and that you won't require surgery.

And re: the topic, it needs unread comment tracking.  Oh, and when adding a new question there's a doodad for displaying the description box, which is fine, but if you've got one link to show it then there should be one to hide it again.  Comment preview might be handy too... as might formatting help text.

Formatting help: it's coming.

Preview: dunno yet. Since you can edit your comments for 30 minutes after posting them, it might not be as necessary.

Chris:

Why do you think that? I don't think that 30 minute editing would be open to that much abuse given that, for a site with next to no moderation, PC regulars are actually quite well-behaved.

30 seconds I think could be useful, if there has to be a feature of this sort. 30 minutes will take away from the hardcore edge of this forum. It's not that I think PC will implode or suffer horribly, but as a currently happy user I don't mind (infact I like) that PC is so.. so.. unforgiving. I guess.

My idea, probably quite imperfect: since session expires with closing the browser, I'd look for unread posts upon logging in and unmark them while reading.

Preview/editing: 30 minutes edit time would be killer on Crap. 2-5 minutes at max, for typos. And big red "EDITED" flag.

Feature requests:

- Pagination.

- rethink submission system. As number of users will grow, queued topics will be promoted in blink of an eye. And, unless I've missed something, eventually ALL questions make it to front page, so we can't talk about any real community-driven moderation, all it takes is 10 trolls to promote a topic.

- checkbox that would allow vote results publicly.

- guestbook (comments) for users and for user photos.

editing; if people need it, let them turn on some kind of delay-to-post feature that embargos their post from public viewing for 30 seconds or whatever.  if they see the post has an error, they can fix it.

Editing will ruin this place.  If you must have it, limit it to 2 minutes or something.  30 is more than enough time to have someone reply and then have the original post changed under their feet.

A really cool implementation would be to let people edit their posts and display the edited version by default, but track the changes and have a "show original post" link for anything that's been edited.
