The Great PlanetCrap Writing Experiment VIII
January 8th 2007, 18:50 CET by chris That's right kids, I'm unilaterally deciding to resurrect the Great PC Writing Experiment, because it's time for me to write a new short story anyway, so why not let everyone else get in on the fun? So this is the thread for "PCWrite 8: PCWrite Takes Manhattan" (no doubt to be followed by "PCWrite Goes to Hell," "PCWrite X," and "Freddy vs. PCWrite"). Because I'm acting as a power-maddened dictator in this endeavour, there will be no voting for themes, and anyone who bitches about my choice of theme has the following options: shut the fuck up and participate, or shut the fuck up and don't participate! This, my friends, is what democracy looks like. We'll have until the end of February -- a nice long time, but not TOO long -- to contemplate the theme and draft up our stories. I hate long topic descriptions so I'll wrap this up. Here's your theme: Twists and Turns. Simple and open-ended. Go nuts. |

So what should the rest of this thread be about, since stories aren't due until the end of February? I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.

Twists and Turns, duh. |^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||__

I choose to delay task "shut the fuck up" for few more hours. Will it be too gay to write real-life story? Another boring blog. INTERNET IS SERIOSE BUSSINES. Nigerian princes will tell you.
Depends. Is it a gay situation story? I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.
I don't have any issue with real-life stories. -chris |
Your options have been clearly listed. If we're to 'shut the fuck up' either way, why have a topic? |
Are you calling my leadership into question?! -chris |
Mutiny, I say! Another boring blog. INTERNET IS SERIOSE BUSSINES. Nigerian princes will tell you.
Are you calling my leadership into question?! Lets just say I got better leadership from the wrapper of a Hot Pocket. |
I'm only one man. There must be at least a dozen guys putting together that hot pocket text. -chris |
If Poof were Donald Trump, Chris, you would be so "You're fired!" I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.
Speaking of Trump, I didn't watch the last couple of seasons of The Apprentice. They really needed a break for the show, they were doing it too quickly between seasons. I watched last night, but if I'm going to watch it anymore it'll be off of the DVR. There was a commercial every 5 min. I'm glad this task wasn't an advertisement for a sponsor, but it looks like that'll change in the future. |
There are 1 stories submitted for this theme. My favourite software feature/bug. Another boring blog. INTERNET IS SERIOSE BUSSINES. Nigerian princes will tell you.
Poof- The quality of the tasks has really gone down over the past few seasons, in my opinion. They used to do some really cool/interesting things (inventing new Pepsi bottles/Pontiac advertisments, for example), now they're washing cars. I don't mind sponsor tie-in tasks. I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.
To be perfectly fair, doesn't EVERY story have twists and turns? Is that what makes it a story? |
No. - words and stuff -
Thank you for that very detailed and helpful answer. |
Either way, thanks for taking the reigns and gettin 'er done, chris. I've been jonesing for one of these. I was just thinking about this weekend. |
I like the sponsered tasks, mostly because I like to see how disappointed the executives get about the contestant ideas. Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family
I am hoping the stories will have more directly evoked twists and turns than simply "plot is happening, so technically there are twists and turns" I'm already cogitatin' and formulatin' away on what I'm going to write. -chris |
Yeah, I'm trying to come up with something already... Maybe some detective story, or futuristic thriller. Hmmm... |
I like the sponsered tasks, mostly because I like to see how disappointed the executives get about the contestant ideas. Amen. I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.

They used to do some really cool/interesting things (inventing new Pepsi bottles/Pontiac advertisments, for example), now they're washing cars. I don't mind sponsor tie-in tasks. I don't like to feel like I'm watching an extended commercial. I liked the car wash thing because it's a relatively easy task that's requires several disciplines to be used as a team to be effective (e.g. sales, marketing, negotiation). Whereas next weeks task is going to suck. Designing swimsuits? Please. What does anyone there have to do with designing swimsuits? It's not in anyone's core competency. |
Oh yeah, they're going to need whole division of brains for designing new holes in those ridiculously huge and all-covering swimwear average girls wear. Another boring blog. INTERNET IS SERIOSE BUSSINES. Nigerian princes will tell you.
Here's how you design swimsuits for women. Find out what the local laws are for nudity, and get as close as you can. Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore. -LP Johnsen Family
..and you'll end up with swimsuits that were trendy 10 years ago. Another boring blog. INTERNET IS SERIOSE BUSSINES. Nigerian princes will tell you.

Whereas next weeks task is going to suck. Designing swimsuits? Please. What does anyone there have to do with designing swimsuits? It's not in anyone's core competency. While I would agree with you that designing swimsuits is kinda goofy, marketing them would not be. It'll be interesting to see how they approach the task. I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.

I noticed while I was in a bookstore that the new Robert Jordan book is out. Anyone read it? Worth picking up? Keep in mind that I read a lot of crap, and the only series I've intentionally quit to avoid suckage was Terry Goodkind. You are a fucking tard, bago. -Greg
I should say, out in paperback. Obviously it's been in print for ages. You are a fucking tard, bago. -Greg
The latest Jordan book is decent if you read the others. Things happen, which is more than I can say for some of the previous ones. I pretty much look at Jordan now as I've started, I might as well finish and see what happens. The last book though, lots of things happen...what that is exactly? I think I've blocked it from my mind. |
I am reading Iron Sunrise by Charles Stross. I hadn't read the previous book in the series, Singularity Sky. So far, my mini-review is that it feels a tad too much like Jon Courtenay Grimwood and not enough like Neal Stephenson for my taste. Like JCG, Stross is trying too hard to be cyberpunk. |
I pretty much look at Jordan now as I've started, I might as well finish and see what happens. Me too, I have a real hard time quitting a series. I'll probably pick it up then. You are a fucking tard, bago. -Greg
I just started reading A Fire Upon the Deep, by Vernor Vinge. So far (I'm only 100 pages or so into it), it's been kickass. |
Also: I get around not having to finish the Wheel of Time books by never having started them. I read about 50 pages of the first one and never bothered finishing it. |
Squeaky I did the same. I ran into a friend of mine in the bookstore who swore by the series, I picked up the first one, and hated it. I asked him later how he liked it, and his response was "Oh, it doesn't get good until the 4th book or so.." I so wanted to beat him in the head. Funk. |
I enjoyed about the first six books, and then it got in a rut. A Fire Upon The Deep is indeed kickass. One of the best scifi books ever written. You are a fucking tard, bago. -Greg
Make sure you also get the sequel, Squeaky. |
Robert Jordan is never worth checking out. Never. Never. No. |
On the flip side, the Malazan Book of the Fallen is the greatest fantasy series ever. |

WSJ is reporting an Apple-Cingular deal. Excitement! Jean-Robert Bourdage ... Hot dog vendor
I know I just creamed myself over the thought of all the products/services apple could bring to a cell phone...oh wait no I didn't since if I cared I'd already have a razr or one of verizon's vcast offerings. |
dear diary, none-1a doesn't care about cellphones! Jean-Robert Bourdage ... Hot dog vendor
On the flip side, the Malazan Book of the Fallen is the greatest fantasy series ever. I'm not making the same mistake with it that I did with George RR Martin. I'm waiting for the whole thing to be done before I start the first one. You are a fucking tard, bago. -Greg
On the flip side, the Malazan Book of the Fallen is the greatest fantasy series ever. SECONDED. I have a hard time stomaching anything else now. It all just seems to trite, compared to the gritty and real world that Erikson has crafted. On top of that, it's obvious that Erikson knows the story of the series and where it's going, as it's planned for ten books, they've all been named, and if you go back and re-read the series, it's pretty obvious he knew from the start what was going to happen when. Absolutely awesome. Oh, and chris rocks. I've been thinking recently that I'd like to pick up writing again. Hopefully I can dust off my rusty gears. Videogames! Why waste good technology on science and medicine?
The last wheel of time book is pretty good. Looks like he's out of his rut and working towards finishing this bitch. In like 3 more books, tops. I hope. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."

Robert Jordan is never worth checking out. Never. Never. No. you're wrong in the head, because his conan books rocked. "Testiculos habet et bene pendentes" — "He has testicles, and they dangle nicely."
Is Jordan going to live that long? |
I'm not making the same mistake with it that I did with George RR Martin. I'm waiting for the whole thing to be done before I start the first one. At the speed I read, by the time I get to book 6 (the most current one, I believe), the whole series will be finished and out. |

Jordan is a hack. Drow are elves but evil. And you know they are evil because of their black skin, and because they are run by women. --Foodbunny
