The Great PlanetCrap Writing Experiment VIII
January 8th 2007, 18:50 CET by chris That's right kids, I'm unilaterally deciding to resurrect the Great PC Writing Experiment, because it's time for me to write a new short story anyway, so why not let everyone else get in on the fun? So this is the thread for "PCWrite 8: PCWrite Takes Manhattan" (no doubt to be followed by "PCWrite Goes to Hell," "PCWrite X," and "Freddy vs. PCWrite"). Because I'm acting as a power-maddened dictator in this endeavour, there will be no voting for themes, and anyone who bitches about my choice of theme has the following options: shut the fuck up and participate, or shut the fuck up and don't participate! This, my friends, is what democracy looks like. We'll have until the end of February -- a nice long time, but not TOO long -- to contemplate the theme and draft up our stories. I hate long topic descriptions so I'll wrap this up. Here's your theme: Twists and Turns. Simple and open-ended. Go nuts. |

Speaking of Trump, I didn't watch the last couple of seasons of The Apprentice. They really needed a break for the show, they were doing it too quickly between seasons. I watched last night, but if I'm going to watch it anymore it'll be off of the DVR. There was a commercial every 5 min. I'm glad this task wasn't an advertisement for a sponsor, but it looks like that'll change in the future. |

Poof- The quality of the tasks has really gone down over the past few seasons, in my opinion. They used to do some really cool/interesting things (inventing new Pepsi bottles/Pontiac advertisments, for example), now they're washing cars. I don't mind sponsor tie-in tasks. I watched Aliens, and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt.

I am hoping the stories will have more directly evoked twists and turns than simply "plot is happening, so technically there are twists and turns" I'm already cogitatin' and formulatin' away on what I'm going to write. -chris |

The quality of the tasks has really gone down over the past few seasons, in my opinion. They used to do some really cool/interesting things (inventing new Pepsi bottles/Pontiac advertisments, for example), now they're washing cars. I don't mind sponsor tie-in tasks. I don't like to feel like I'm watching an extended commercial. I liked the car wash thing because it's a relatively easy task that's requires several disciplines to be used as a team to be effective (e.g. sales, marketing, negotiation). Whereas next weeks task is going to suck. Designing swimsuits? Please. What does anyone there have to do with designing swimsuits? It's not in anyone's core competency. |

I noticed while I was in a bookstore that the new Robert Jordan book is out. Anyone read it? Worth picking up? Keep in mind that I read a lot of crap, and the only series I've intentionally quit to avoid suckage was Terry Goodkind. You are a fucking tard, bago. -Greg

The latest Jordan book is decent if you read the others. Things happen, which is more than I can say for some of the previous ones. I pretty much look at Jordan now as I've started, I might as well finish and see what happens. The last book though, lots of things happen...what that is exactly? I think I've blocked it from my mind. |

I am reading Iron Sunrise by Charles Stross. I hadn't read the previous book in the series, Singularity Sky. So far, my mini-review is that it feels a tad too much like Jon Courtenay Grimwood and not enough like Neal Stephenson for my taste. Like JCG, Stross is trying too hard to be cyberpunk. |

I just started reading A Fire Upon the Deep, by Vernor Vinge. So far (I'm only 100 pages or so into it), it's been kickass. |

Also: I get around not having to finish the Wheel of Time books by never having started them. I read about 50 pages of the first one and never bothered finishing it. |

Squeaky I did the same. I ran into a friend of mine in the bookstore who swore by the series, I picked up the first one, and hated it. I asked him later how he liked it, and his response was "Oh, it doesn't get good until the 4th book or so.." I so wanted to beat him in the head. Funk. |

I enjoyed about the first six books, and then it got in a rut. A Fire Upon The Deep is indeed kickass. One of the best scifi books ever written. You are a fucking tard, bago. -Greg

On the flip side, the Malazan Book of the Fallen is the greatest fantasy series ever. SECONDED. I have a hard time stomaching anything else now. It all just seems to trite, compared to the gritty and real world that Erikson has crafted. On top of that, it's obvious that Erikson knows the story of the series and where it's going, as it's planned for ten books, they've all been named, and if you go back and re-read the series, it's pretty obvious he knew from the start what was going to happen when. Absolutely awesome. Oh, and chris rocks. I've been thinking recently that I'd like to pick up writing again. Hopefully I can dust off my rusty gears. Videogames! Why waste good technology on science and medicine?

I'm not making the same mistake with it that I did with George RR Martin. I'm waiting for the whole thing to be done before I start the first one. At the speed I read, by the time I get to book 6 (the most current one, I believe), the whole series will be finished and out. |
