The Great PlanetCrap Writing Experiment VIII
January 8th 2007, 18:50 CET by chris

That's right kids, I'm unilaterally deciding to resurrect the Great PC Writing Experiment, because it's time for me to write a new short story anyway, so why not let everyone else get in on the fun? So this is the thread for "PCWrite 8: PCWrite Takes Manhattan" (no doubt to be followed by "PCWrite Goes to Hell," "PCWrite X," and "Freddy vs. PCWrite").

Because I'm acting as a power-maddened dictator in this endeavour, there will be no voting for themes, and anyone who bitches about my choice of theme has the following options: shut the fuck up and participate, or shut the fuck up and don't participate! This, my friends, is what democracy looks like. We'll have until the end of February -- a nice long time, but not TOO long -- to contemplate the theme and draft up our stories.

I hate long topic descriptions so I'll wrap this up. Here's your theme: Twists and Turns.

Simple and open-ended. Go nuts.

The last wheel of time book is pretty good. Looks like he's out of his rut and working towards finishing this bitch. In like 3 more books, tops. I hope.

I'm not making the same mistake with it that I did with George RR Martin.  I'm waiting for the whole thing to be done before I start the first one.

At the speed I read, by the time I get to book 6 (the most current one, I believe), the whole series will be finished and out.

Feist wrote some great shit... though he now spends his time regugating the same story over and over, but the first series he did and the series he did with Janie Wurts. SO GOOD.

I'll try Malazan Book of the Fallen. Sounds interesting.

As for Jordan... OMG. The first book was really really good. The second? Better. The third? Somehow better. My wife and I read each one wondering how he could keep making them better. The Fourth? Better. After that? They went slowly downhill. At about the 6th or 7th book, they had completely derailed, though because your so invested in the characters, you keep reading. The last one did get some stuff done and though it's not going to end when he promised (at said a max of 10, then 11 books), it did get a lot better.

Will he finish it though? I don't know. It's selfish of me, but I really hope he doesn't leave us hanging. I've been reading these Jordan books forever.

I only read the first four Jordan books and I enjoyed them, but ultimately their length kept me from continuing.  What is it that you guys don't like about him?  I figure I'll pick them up again at some point.

There's a mascohistic aspect to me that has forced me to read every WoT book so far even though they started to get annoying around book 7 or so. The most recent one was a lot better than the previous few but it still suffers from some of the same problems. The main one that springs to mind is that there are just too many characters to keep track of. That would be fine if the secondary characters only made an appearance in one or two consecutive books but Jordan has an awful tendency to introduce a character (and associated sub-plot) in book 4 and not revisit that character and his/her subplot until book 8 when I've forgotten who they are and what they're doing.

I also find it frustrating that with all of the new abilities that Rand and Egwene and so on have learned (Travelling, in particular), it has never occurred to them to somehow meet up and go 'so, this is the shit that I know, what shit do you know?'.

I guess some people also have issues with Jordan's prose but it's never really bothered me.

A side-effect of the too many characters thing is that there are entire books in which Rand barely features at all and the main arc (Tarmon Gai'don or whatever it's called) isn't advanced in any meaningful way.

On the other hand, one of the strengths of WoT is the abundance of characters. You're more or less guaranteed to like at least one or two of them.

Does anyone have suggestions for email based games only requiring 3 players? I've googled for these Play By Email games, but they mostly seem to be community based, rather than standalone things. Also, I don't know which ones are fun.

Jordan is completely incapable of writing realistic female characters. Without exception, they're all scheming, manipulative shrews who spend every waking moment tugging their braids and bitching at the male chracters (yeah, yeah, they're that way in real life too, blah blah blah).

Of course, his male characters aren't a whole lot better--they're mostly wishy-washy idiots who can't make up their minds about anything.

Lastly, his prose is leaden.

I just wonder what they're naming policy is these days? They get rid off the ibook to call it macbook instead, goes with appleTV, but names the phone iPhone. They only rationale for it must be to tie it in closer with iPod.

Well, when you consider that it's a video iPod and a phone and a tablet computer combined ... that's a pretty fair price.  I won't be buying it at that price but it's still seems completely reasonable to me.

Plus it'll have more games than the PS3 at launch.
