Midterm WHAM, COCK IN THE ASS!!!
November 9th 2006, 12:33 CET by Jibble

Will there be even more political scandals? Will the Democrats take advantage of the wind in their sails? Will we finally see an investigation on Iraq, Diebold, Delay, Abramoff, Hastert, 9/11, or detainee torture?

Yes, no, and no. Of course, it's always fun to talk about it. What's up for grabs in your local election? Do you support any candidate in particular? Why or why not? Been a while since we had an actual factual political topic around here, and it's time to get the discussion out of the damned Kerry Wins! thread.

Unbelievable.

I'm not at all surprised at Harman and Rockefeller, considering their constant enabling of wrongdoing. Pelosi, though, I'd have expected a little better. Every last one of these assholes needs to be grouped in with the Bush administration and put on trial for war crimes.

This is truly a sad period in our nation's history.

That report is very weaselly in its accusations. It stinks of the CIA trying to cover itself - "U.S. officials" means CIA agents, of course. It reads like a CIA press release. Come on Jibble, don't be so gullible.

It stinks of the CIA being sick of Democrats feigning outrage over abuses that they knew about and did nothing to stop.

Like I said, Harman and Rockefeller have a history of doing this. Rockefeller is pushing for immunity for telecom companies in the illegal wiretapping scandal. Harman defended the administration when it came out, and scolded the New York Times for harming national security. They're both enablers of the worst kind when it comes to illegal activity by the Bush administration.

There's a pattern here (Greenwald discusses it pretty extensively) of Democrats who find out about something illegal that the administration is doing, say nothing, then magically become outraged when it becomes public.

Monday should be interesting. It'd be fun to watch Dodd filibuster the ridiculous new FISA bill (though I'm sure Reid will do some procedural maneuvering to stop it). It'll also be interesting to see if Clinton (probably not), Obama (maybe), or Biden (more likely, since he's trailing) will show up to support Dodd.

My prediction? Full amnesty for the telcoms. Pardoning malfeasance because Bush says so is the new hallmark of the Democratic Congress.

Huckabee won in Iowa by a wide margin. Fucking awesome.

Also, Obama...this is going to be a really interesting election season if these numbers hold through the rest of the caucus into the nomination. A progressive new candidate for change versus a Southern Baptist minister.

Let me just go ahead and call it for Obama in a landslide.

I'm just glad Romney did so poorly.  After all that pandering to the Christian Right, changing all his views to match theirs, they still wouldn't vote for him.  I don't know if they couldn't get over his Mormonism, or they just saw through his pandering, but either way I'm happy about it.

And go Obama.  He seems like less of a politician (if only slightly) than the other candidates.  I consider that a good thing.

I'd like to see an Obama/Edwards ticket on account of Edwards' positions on corporations along with their combined attitude towards lobbyists (though Edwards is admittedly more hard-line on that issue), though I know it's way too soon to call anyone the winner right now.

I wonder if Edwards is too liberal to win on a ticket though.  Obama/Biden may do better.

From the New York Times:
Democrats pointed to some concessions they had won from the White House in the lengthy negotiations. The final bill includes a reaffirmation that the surveillance law is the “exclusive” means of conducting intelligence wiretaps — a provision that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats insisted would prevent Mr. Bush or any future president from evading court scrutiny in the way that the N.S.A. program did.

See, now no one can ignore the law because the law says you have to obey the law. It's a good thing they have that in there. If only someone had thought of writing down the fact that you have to obey the law before now, none of this would have happened. I don't even think it's possible to break the law now. How would you do it? The law says you have to obey the law. That's ironclad. I don't see any wiggle room there. Unlike the last law, this one will never be ignored. Good work, blue guys.

They held up "exclusivity" as a concession, then a judge made a ruling that the FISA law we wrote 30 years ago "was the 'exclusive' means for the president to eavesdrop on Americans, and he rejected the government’s claim that the president’s constitutional authority as commander in chief trumped that law."

In other words, the White House agreed to a concession...for something that was already settled law. I honestly can't imagine them being more ineffectual. I hope they enjoy all the attack ads they thought they'd avoid with this craven capitulation.

I don't believe they're any better at all. Their stance on the issues is better for me than the Republicans, but they're clearly willing to betray any and all of that when necessary. I don't think any Democrat would hesitate a moment to take the opposite side of a debate if it meant personal gain. Like all politicians, they're concerned with their careers first, the country second, and the people last.
