Planetcrap: Just to keep it all in one place.
August 17th 2006, 09:30 CEST by lwf

Planetcrap is the best website on the internet, that much is a fact, but has the recent trend of crappers starting up so-called "blogs" taken away from the main planetcrap website? Most experts agree that "maybe."

Not that anybody pays any attention to the things I say, but I can't but feel a little hypocritical in writing this topic, since whenever anybody complains about the state of PC I am the first to tell that person to "stfu, planetcrap is the greatest." Lately, though, I am beginning to feel like the decay of planetcrap is not just another Jokeresque conspiracy theory.

Analysts have observed a trend at planetcrap over the past few years. Topics have become much less frequent, partly due to voter apathy but mainly due to a submission bin that has been as barren as an old hag. Many regulars have abandoned the site, citing family, friends, work, and WoW as the cause. Nevertheless there remains a core group of seemingly die-hard crappers who refuse to walk away and let this site, not unlike PC gaming, die an honourable death.

Speaking from my own point of view, I truly love the culture of planetcrap. Planetcrap is good people. I try to think about what life would be like without planetcrap and all is gray and empty. Perhaps what we're experiencing is just the natural aging process of an internet community, or perhaps it is something much more sinister, yet preventable.

I'm referring of course, to blogs. Many prominent crappers have starting "blogging". Crapper blogs are the thermite that will eventually bring down PC. At first it was just a trickle, but now it seems like every signature links to some kind of off-site content by the poster. It's difficult to pinpoint where exactly this started. Caryn has been blogging for years, Bailey and Ashiran combined for some ill-fated project, and then there was the venerable UAC. Now we're at the point where Px, Shadarr, m0nty, Caryn, Perkins, jjohnsen, jibble, and many more who I am too lazy to link, are all blogging to some extent. In many cases it is innocuous enough, planetcrap doesn't have any img tags, so people like Marsh and Penguin are justified in their off-site operations.

Of course most people wouldn't want anybody (friends, family, co-workers) to come and read their comments at planetcrap. Because it would too much work sifting for who they're interested in, and also due to the occasional discussion of flapping wind-ravaged vaginas and the like. Planetcrap can be hard to keep up with. As far as I know, there are no relatives on planetcrap. So it is easy to understand why people want a place of their own where they can post their comments and have non-crappers read them.

What is perhaps disconcerting is the thought that, with all this effort put into their blogs, our discussions here at planetcrap are suffering. Planetcrap is the place where you know you'll get read, or at the very least scrollwheeled, by a diverse group of mostly interesting and intelligent people. I am not saying that planetcrap shouldn't blog, but I like having it all, as they say, in one place. All the crappers, I mean. I think that discussion is better than blogging, but maybe that's just my preference. I was considering the suggestion that maybe planetcrap users could merge their blogs with planetcrap proper, but I don't think that would work any more than would merging IRC with the front page. Maybe what is needed is a Planetcrap based reality TV show.

People used to [blog]blog[/blog] inside of planetcrap posts, and there was much complaining. But now that so much of the blogging has moved off-site, doesn't anybody else miss it? Planetcrap has obviously degenerated into the ultimate in off-topic and current events discussion, but who is to blame? PC gaming for dying? The Sports Thread? Jibble? Or is it just an unwillingness on the part of some people to contribute, for whatever reason. I don't feel like I contribute personally very much to the discussion here, except rarely. But I appreciate those who do, even the fukkan morans. When there are no new posts I read old posts, and it becomes more and more the depressing the further back I go. Nevertheless planetcrap holds a special place in all of our hearts. It is a funny place.

The problem is you, planetcrap, it's you. Every time to blog off-site, morn weeps.

But for some reason along teh way it changed all the links so they don't point ot the right place.  For example, look at the top post on my original page here.  The link points to my general movie page.  Now look at that same post on the Wordpress created page here.  It took out a portion of the link and points nowhere now.  Any hints?

There's not really much you can do other than go back and edit the broken links by hand.  I think the problem is your original page was /johnsenclan/Home/Home.html and your link was ../Movies.html which would ultimately point to /johnsenclan/Movies.html, sadly it looks like the Wordpress importer has converted the link as if it originated from where Wordpress is installed (/wordpress/) and not where the old blog was so it's rewritten it to point to /Movies.html.

It's actually a bit odd, initially I thought the importer script had just ignored relative links and accepted they'd break in their new location, which would be the easy way of doing things and how I'd do it.  However when you look at the source for the new site you'll see the link is now an absolute one (http://blah blah) so it has indeed been meddled with, just meddled with wrongly.  Therefore there's three possibilities, 1) the link hasn't been touched and Wordpress is coded to automatically expand relative links on the fly, 2) when running the importer it asked you for the old location and you typed in the new one by mistake or 3) the importer script is broken.

Short version: you've only got a dozen or so posts so fix it manually, you wuss!

That's the front page, there are actually 52 total.  Oh, well I'll fix thm this weekend.  I pointed to the right location, but it could have screwed up in the importer, iWeb adds some funky stuff to the RSS so that might have done it.  Anyway, thanks for the help.

Another question.  Eventually I'm going to change it so instead of johnsenclan.com/wordpress, my Wordpress stuff is just at johnsenclan.com.  Is it pretty easy to move it around, or should I just take down the site and make it that way from the beginning?

I have to put together a concept art portfolio by Monday, so I'm in super crunch mode. I managed to put together these three concepts in the last two days, after work. I'm aiming for "could be seen in any old sci-fi game as of late" for the theme. I would definitely rather be working from a brief.

Let me know what you think here or on my blog; any feedback is appreciated.

The chick's tits look weird in the one where she's not naked.  It's like their being pulled up and out, toward her shoulder.  They look fine in the naked one though.

Also, I don't like the knives on the demon guy.  The blades look too wide.  Besides which, what's the point of having hunting knives randomly sticking out of your armour?  You can't kill anyone with them.  Now, if they were circular saw blades....

They show you have ideas and the means to visualize them, and I do believe that's just about the point of you showing them these pictures in the first place. I'd say they're likely more interested in how fast you can work than how pretty your females are.

The thing is, when you consciously do something that you think other people will like, it inevitably comes out bland and boring. Think of the most interesting thing *you* would like to see, then go to town.

The world is full of bland concept artists that can't do something unique to save your lives. It's hard to find someone with a vision, and those people can almost always be art directed to pull back if necessary.

Embrace your inner wrongness. Give us robotic concept art that fits to some bizarro world that hasn't been drawn yet.

Px, here are my thoughts:

The sci-fi concepts show competency at coming up with something that a game company would typically go for. But honestly? I have to agree with what was said: it doesn't show off the strength of your unique style at all. Those concepts look like Generic Sci-Fi Game(tm). Which would be okay if you were at a game company whose next project is a kind of generic sci-fi game and you were assigned to concept some stuff, but I think they came out kind of generically because that's not really where you're interest is, it's just a "here's something to pay the bills" kind of thing. Which, of course, is what you could face as a concept artist at a game company who might be on projects that aren't really in your field of interest.

But I don't feel like that's good for your style. The puppies and robots, like everyone has said, is where you shine. If you were submitted this to a game company -- I don't know who you're giving this too -- and I knew your background already I would guess that you're applying to the wrong kind of place for you and that you would not be happy having to do stuff that's outside of your style interests.

You're more of a Beep Industries or Double Fine kind of concept artist, not an id Software or Epic or other typically gritty-art oriented artist.

Anyway, I guess that was more of a comment on wondering where you're submitting this rather than the quality of the concepts themselves, because if you're having to do some generic sci-fi concepts, I'm worried that it's not a company that's going to play to your strengths.

All good points - which is why I posted here in the first place. I really appreciate the advice. I'm going to do one orthagonal view of the generic cyborg villain just to show I am capable of doing so and then I'm filling the rest of the portfolio with my strengths. I don't want to jinx myself, but I'm turning the portfolio in to Wideload, in Chicago.

Oh yes, artists must suffer before their work is meaningful. I am SO damn tired of that.

I mean, there's a point where you're falling back on learned techniques so much so that you're doing it by rote, and there's using your mastery of a certain style to experiment further. It's easy to be hard on yourself and think you're always doing the former, but when it comes to creating assets for a shipping product, that's a strength. The ability to rapidly and fluently create a certain look will mean your art director can depend on you to bring shit to life on a schedule. Far better that than some conflicted weenie who hits deadlines on a whim.

'Real artists ship'... right?
