Tidings of Joy!
December 15th 2005, 21:06 CET by Chunkstyle

What are you asking for this year?  What are you buying others?  Why do English people eat puddings?  Why do people buy that album of dogs barking Jingle Bells?  What's your favorite Christmas memory?  Do you believe in Santa Claus, or are you a joyless Scrooge?

Be careful out there today, people.  Today may very well be crazy, anything can happen day...I have been receiving signs!

The Today show announced this morning that Brokeback Mountain opened in exactly sixty-nine theaters and right after that was an advertisement I'd not seen before for a local OB-GYN named "Dr. Hymen" - you have been warned!

Brokeback Mountain made $36,000 per theater that it was showed in last weekend. King Kong made $14,000. Brokeback was really good, if a bit sad. Haven't seen Kong yet.

m0nty, there was a lot wrong with Kong.  Overall it was an entertaining remake, but you're right, besides a 50 foot monkey, a bit too many unbelievable circumstances and actions in the film.  I found myself so bored during the show I was picking the film apart.  You mentioned a few that I saw, especially the ground worm things not moving.  Also, when Kong was running through the forest with that girl in his paw, the way he was thrusting his arm around, the G forces would have knocked her out, yet somehow she was conscious.  How the hell did they get that monkey onto the boat to take him back to New York?  When Kong was running through New York with the military chasing him and blasting at him, I found it odd that they'd blow the shit out of buildings in an attempt to kill kong.  Innocent people lived in those buildings and they're just blowing big ass holes in the sides of buildings all willy nilly.  Oh yeah, the man kicking a Raptor in the head and the raptor reeling back from the brunt force?  Come on.. Geesh... To many stupid things like that going on in the film.  It was almost as bad as Star Wars.

The highlight of the silliness was the fight with the three T-Rexes. I think Kong must have been watching some Wrestlemania because I could have sworn I saw some piledrivers, body slams and even the people's elbow.

Or perhaps he is really in the Matrix and just got some upgrades. "I know Kong Fu."

For fuck's sake! It's fucking King Kong: the silliness is pretty much implied by the premise. You can over analyse these things.

I agree with Hulka on this one. Some scenes were just not right. The scene where naomi is presented to KK hanging by her tiny arms on these thick ropes, he just grabs her by the torso and picks her like some ripe fruit running into the jungle. Made me flinch.

While I would agree that some of the effects left something to be desired (the dinosaur chase, for one), those nitpicks sound like someone's actively looking for reasons to not like the movie.

All I'm saying is that you can only suspend disbelief so far. I'm prepared to accept a giant ape in a Lost World scenario, but not one that fights like Jackie Chan. In the middle of a fight sequence where I should have been going "ooh, cool" like Jackson did at Harryhausen's work, I was instead giggling like a schoolgirl at how dumb it looked.

The storyboarding session for that must have been fun, though.

"Let's have Kong fight a T-Rex and punch him around like Rocky!"
"No, two T-Rexes and he has all this totally cool ju jitsu shit going on!"
"I got it! Three T-Rexes, punches like Rocky, totally cool ju jitsu, plus he's got more wrestling moves than Hulk Hogan!"
"No way dude!"
"Yes way!"
"Awesome!"

This is about the silliest and sadest movie nitpick discussion I've ever seen.  I dunno what it is about people that love to build folks up (Jackson with LotR) and then gleefully look for ways to tear them down (Jackson with Kong).  Maybe it's not that at all, though, and the movie just goes too far in pushing the believability boundry; maybe it's more of a case of 'I can do better and I'm green-eyed and bitter'  and maybe it's just too long and self-indulgent of a movie where Jackson had too many lips glued to his ass.  I'll have to see it before I can jump in to the nerdalicious chitter chat.

Well yeah, Disney won the bidding war for theme park rights to the Potter franchise quite some time ago.  I doubt he'll appear at the Magic Kingdom, though.  It would make much more sense to use him to color Epcot's World Showcase.  There's a goodly amount of seldom-used land where they host occasional events that could be turned into Hogwarts, perhaps with Diagon Alley being built off of the England pavillion, leading you to the school.  Or something.  Anyway, it'd be really cool and a great way to bring more families to Epcot and especially to the (what kids find boring) world showcase.

I haven't noticed Cool&Quiet making any difference so far.  Of course it's possible I don't have it set up properly, it's one of those hardware things that are cool but I can never be bothered working out how to get it set up, much like suspend and all that power management stuff.

All fights about how good Harry Potter is aside, full sized Disney-funded sets like that would be really fun to poke around in, and there's a lot to work with (candy shops, taverns, etc.)

You have to enable it in the BIOS, then install a driver, then select 'minimal power management' in the control panel\power options, and then forget about it. Dropped my temps in idle and under light load (browsing, mp3, etc.) by a good 4-6 °C with no ill side effects so far.

Maybe it's not that at all, though, and the movie just goes too far in pushing the believability boundry;

The story is just too anachronistic.  In '33 the world still held the wonder of potentially unexplored places where these fantastic things might exist.  Now... not so much.

Also, like the Wachowski brothers and even the venerable George Lucas, Peter Jackson has proved once again that it is disastrous for a great filmmaker to become so powerful that nobody is in a position to force edits from his 'vision'.

I don't understand.  If they've had the rights for a while, why haven't they fasttracked this?  They should have had a new ride the day the first movie came out.

Ahh, if that's all that is needed then I do have set mine up, I wasn't sure before because I hadn't noticed any real difference and figured I'd missed something out.  Of course I wasn't doing any sort of accurate before/after measuring since I can't be bothered installing a temperature monitor so it's quite possible it's running really well.

Bringing up the System Properties panel when running idle is the easiest way to check it - if the detected speed is around the GHz mark, it's most likely enabled. Just sayin'.
