Ok, back to consoles!
More and more rumors are surfacing that developers are turning their back on the PS3 in favor of the XBox 360. Because of the much more difficult development path for PS3 games, the costs of making a game for this platform are much higher.
One example is the PS3 version of the Sega game Condemned : Criminal Origins being cancelled, with Sega instead focussing on the XBox 360 version of the game. Apparently there are currently 103 PS3 titles in development, and over 200 titles for the XBox 360.

The only direct source I have is a translated Japanese article, but it certainly isn't the only source of the rumors.

Time will tell, lets not forget that the 360 is out next in two months and the PS3 is not expected in the US/Europe until mid-late 2006.

Plenty of time for more developers to come on-board.

Given the big sloppy kisses MS gives to developers, I don't find this suprising.

I heard that the system (ps3) is an absolute bear to develop for...you essientially have to write your own graphics API before starting on writing your game.  That's VERY old school.

I heard that the PS3 requires the blood of virgins in order to run. Fortunately, the average PS3 developer and owner should fill the bill nicely.

The PS2 was horrible to code for too thanks to the fact that it had almost no memory and to get any kind of decent performance you had to make sure both VUs and the cpu were all working well in parallel.

What makes the situation really funny is that Sony essentially stole the market by producing a console that was really easy to develop for (the original Playstation).  And the only reason Microsoft was able to dent Sony's market-share last generation was because they made the Xbox very developer friendly while the PS2 wasn't.

Sony seems to be blinded by hubris at this point to not see where this will head.  The Playstation brand is still so powerful that they'll do OK, but considering how much Sony as a whole depends upon Playstation earnings to stay afloat these days and the fact that the Xbox brand has had really big gains with the younger high school/college generation, you think they'd be smarter about this.

If the PS3 can play PS2/1 games and the Xbox 360 can't play Xbox games then it won't matter.

Yeah, the total number of times I played PS1 games on a PS2 : 1 game.

The total number of times I had to reset the game due to fucked up emulation: 6.

First of all, there's no chance of the PS3 playing PS1 games.  Second, bago's right.  The only times I've ever played old games on a system were when I didn't own the previous system, so they were new to me.  The Revolution download thing sounds kind of cool, but honestly I have emulators and hundreds of games on my computer that I never play.

I fail to see how a hard to develop ps3 drives people to making 360 games. It's not like that tricore cpu or HD requirement is going to make games easy to develop or cheap. If any thing difficulty/cost of development should be pushing people toward Revolution.

As for backward compatibility, it's completely unimportant for the 360. The only use for backwards compatibility it to make pushing the system easier while new titles are in short supply. With the lead time the 360 has it'll have more then enough games available to sell on the strength of it's own line up by the time the competition gets to market. Now if they where getting released closer together having an old line of titles would help the ps3 hit a higher early install base (getting more developer interest for latter titles in the process) but as it stands it really just helps a bit in erasing some of the early release advantage the 360 has.

People always scream about this ,but I wish there were real numbers that would show how many people took advanage of it.  Personally I never have, and I don't see it as any kind of a selling point.  Of course I don't normally buy a new system until 1-2 years into the cycle, so ther are always plenty of games for me to play.

Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore.  -LP

The problem is always that you think you're going to play the old games, but then you realize that they're not as good as the new games anyway.

It's also nice to know that your currently library of games isn't useless with the new consoles. It's a marketing feature that probably isn't used that much but translates into significant sales anyway.

You guys forget that the Xbox is OMG LOL HUGE and there's no way you can have both systems hooked up in the same house without building an addition.

The "old game" argument is undercut somewhat by the sheer number of sequels that get made.  There's less pressure to play "Fun Adventure 1" again when you know they're making "Fun Adventure 2" for the new system.

Precisely.  Once I got Vice City, I stopped playing GTA3.  Once I got San Andreas, I stopped playing Vice City.  Once GTA4:Kill the Ethnic Groups and Murder Babies comes out for the Xbox 360 or the PS3, I won't play any of the other three games.  The rich cycle of abuse continues.

I agree with TrunkDr (shoot me!).

Console backward compatibility is generally not used at all but many people probably do still consider it a big plus in their mental bullet-point list because we like to feel like we're not losing out on our past investments, even if we'll never actually use them again anyway.   People are fucked up like that.

At one point Sega even tried to make money off adding backwards compatibility (Master System adapter for the Genesis). I guess MS is doing the same this round with the $400 system vs the $300 one, in some roundabout way.
