Enter the Arena.net
August 2nd 2000, 02:59 CEST by andy Almost as if they've been reading our last thread, Triforge -- the PC games company formed in March by three ex-Blizzard developers -- has announced a change of name to Arena.net and a new publishing strategy. The three Blizzard veterans, recently joined by a computer science professor and an ex-Microsoft developer, will publish their own games exclusively online. In an interview on GameSpy, Arena.net's Pat Wyatt has already made two confident statements. He predicted that "because our games are server hosted, cheating will never be an issue", and that "our games will be less expensive than retail games". (No mention of how much less expensive, though...) There's one question that should perhaps be raised at this point, especially as the new era of online-publishing is still untested and is bound to claim a few scalps along the way: If a game is multiplayer-based and can only be played on the developer's own centralised servers, what happens if the company shuts down? The obvious answer is that people can't play the game anymore, so perhaps a better question would be: What can be done about it? |

Totally off topic ... but did anyone read the FAKK2 review on Stomped? <a href="http://www.stomped.com/articles/fakk2/"></a> The guy gives it a 96% and then says at the end ... <b>"After going through the first few levels I have to say that overall the game is a ton of fun."</b> I'm sure the game is cool, and I'm going to pick it up sometime this week ... but it's sort of annoying to see someone give a game 96% (damn near perfect) after only playing a few levels. -- Warren Marshall - Professional Nuisance<I><B></B></I><I></I><I></I> |

Um, Warren when was the last time you got your eyes checked? Seriously Did you actually READ THE FULL ARTICLE? OR rush through it like the fool you are? Redwood Played through the entire game.. The LAST PORTION is a separate opinion from " Heavy Metal - F.A.K.K.2 Review Conclusion Without a doubt, Heavy Metal - F.A.K.K. 2 is the best third person game I have ever played. It most certainly puts the top selling Tomb Raider to shame in every category. Despite the game's lack of multiplayer, I can see it being replayable as well due to its very mod friendly system. One other thing to note is level load times are relatively quick and saves/loads are so fast that I am spoiled. Now I will expect all future games to load save games that quickly. I believe this game will be fun for a wide variety of gamers. I definitely hope first person shooters fans do not dismiss it because it is third person. That would be a mistake costing many fun hours at the computer. This is the game I will be telling everybody I know to rush out and buy right away, so I recommend everybody else does the same. Final Rating: 96% John "JCal" Callaham's First Impressions I just wanted to add my personal thoughts about Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K. 2 (This is being written without reading what Redwood will post, BTW). After going through the first few levels I have to say that overall the game is a ton of fun. The art design, one of Ritual Entertainment's strong points, is excellent here, with great level design, textures, and character art and animation. The combat system is explained through a training exercise that is well done and is helpful even for the experienced gamers. The interaction between the player character Julie and the other characters in the game is terrific and it really makes you care about the various NPCs Yes, there is real character development going on here." And as it says.. ITs called FIRST IMPRESSIONs.. Just Like Gone Gold often has first impressions. LOL Man Take your time and read everything next time. |

Andy - "/me points at the phrase "first few levels" and the word "overall". WTF?" All hail the almighty hit. :) No doubt they are getting a shitload (tm) of hits for posting the world's first review of the game, and don't feel too uncomfortable with the fact that they have given it 96% despite not playing 96% of the game. ;) Sadly people do this kind of thing all the time, although they're usually not quite so brazen about it... |

Regarding your Derek Bashing.. That's separate.. Truthfully.. I hate no one on the internet. I haven't you.. I don't know you in real life.. The Internet has a strange affect on people and their dealings with others.. I see 10000 people attack one man... and Because of a game.. I see 10000 idiots.. Especially because the guy made the mistake of defending his game.. because he didn't want the game rushed out. I sympathize with that.. IF your going to ahem... insult someone... LOOK at Lord British and U9.. Now that is a tragedy that could have been averted.. but this guy would never admit the truth. Derek will admit..He will admit 1.0 STUNK. OF course he reminds everyone you have the option of getting 2.08. See There is a difference.. Lord British made all kinds of excuses and mainly blamed MS D3d. Instead of taking the blame.. and pointing his and this programmer's ineptitude when handling D3d support..and poorly designing the levels for mainstream pcs. |

This article is similar to the new game Clusterball. They release some part of the game, and in order to get more, you pay for it, then downloading it. Only thing that CB does is the ranking, the servers are from dedicated servers. You would have to pay for extra maps, about 3 maps for about 10 bucks. The game doesn't have any tournament mode for single player, it only has 'training' (facing AI) and internet (which the real 'game' comes in). The game should have about 9 + 2 free maps in the end. 9 / 3 x 10 = 30 bucks. 30 bucks for maps?! Same goes with Sanity, who is going to pay 6 bucks for booster packs? Whats the point of having them if (according to KING OF TEH MONSTERS) the free 'talents' is going to counter the booster packs? This idea won't fly with Arena.net, even though server I don't mind from a corporation, but everything buying from the internet? Problems will rise <I><B></B></I><I></I><I></I> |

Dark, <quote>the cynic in me says 'Demo out in 2 weeks, thatll give them 2 weeks to sucker the impulse buyers and fanboys, before they can try/buy' </quote> You are VERY right. Of course. It's called marketing. Demos should be after the initial release. Two weeks to a month I think. This does allow you to get impulse and early adopter sales. The purpose of a demo should be to convince those that weren't willing to buy the game sight unseen, or from word of mouth. Now I agree this is dangerous. But only in the case of crappy/buggy games. But Raven screwed up bad with Elite Force. It's not due till September? So why the hell do I have a demo in July? Most people will have played it, lost interest and moved on by then. Few games can maintain fan interest for longer than a couple weeks. Voyager should have released a demo 2 weeks prior or 2 weeks after, as any game these days should. George Broussard, 3D Realms |

<QUOTE> George I've gota agree with you, I can not tell you guys how many times I've played a demo only to totaly forget the game before it came out. </QUOTE> Not only that, but most demos aren't as polished as final releases, so they show the game in a worse light. I think every game should have a demo, but it wouldn't bother me in the least if companies released them after the game was out. Blizzard does it right. With Starcraft they gave us a polished demo that had new missions not in the full game, missions that even served as a bit of a prequel to the story. I downloaded the demo just to play the new missions. I'm just a freelance writer, so I don't know the talks that go on between mags and game companies, but I do know that a lot of cover CD demo deals are done months ahead of time, putting pressure on the developers to have something ready. Sometimes that results in a disaster, like the first Lords of Magic demo that appeared on a CGW disc. It was utter drek. Of course the game was pretty bad when released, but the demo was even worse. |

Steve - "Only speaking for the way I work, if a company grants us an exclusive demo, we don't actually care when we get it so long as it's exclusive" Unfortunately here in the UK the magazines have a competition each month to see how many times they can slap the word "EXCLUSIVE!" on their front cover... PC Gamer won hands down this month - PC Gamer - "EXCLUSIVE REVIEW!" of Grand Prix 3 (overkill eight page review, though it was at least the first I saw of the game, so this one at least was probably exclusive) "EXCLUSIVE!" on Escape From Monkey Island (great long preview with lots of screenshots, some of which could well be exclusive) "WORLD EXCLUSIVE!" on Aliens vs Predator 2 (turned out to be a couple of paragraphs based on the recent press release and two pieces of concept art, hacked on to the start of a three page feature on "No One Lives Forever" at the last minute) "EXCLUSIVE!" Halo movie on the CD (didn't check it out, so it could be for all I know) "EXCLUSIVE!" Half-Life add-on special on the CD (turned out to be the latest patch, the latest Counter-Strike beta, and some other rubbish - hardly exclusive by any stretch of the imagination) "EXCLUSIVE!" Quake III Arena Weapons Factory (I'm pretty sure this was already out on the net before the magazine was released) "EXCLUSIVE!" add-on for Theme Park World (no idea) PC Zone - "WORLD EXCLUSIVE REVIEW" of Deus Ex (unfortunately the game was already on sale in the USA by the time the magazine hit the stands, so the review was anything but exclusive) "EXCLUSIVE" Deus Ex demo on the CD (ditto) "EXCLUSIVE" Terminus demo on the CD (no idea) PC Gaming World - "EXCLUSIVE!" demo of Starlancer (no idea, but as the game's already been out for months it's hardly that exciting anyway) "EXCLUSIVE!" new Theme Park World level (presumably not the same one that later appeared in PC Gamer) "EXCLUSIVE! Invaluable Daikatana game guide" (invaluable if you were stupid enough to buy the game I guess) Ah, I love print magazines. The sad thing is, the great unwashed masses out there probably don't know that all those "EXCLUSIVE!" demos were available over the internet for weeks beforehand, and don't realise that all those "EXCLUSIVE!" features are (by definition) out of date before the magazine is even printed. *sighs* Needless to say, I'm cancelling all my magazine subscriptions next time they come up for renewal. I would have done it last year, but I thought the cover CDs might actually be useful until cable modems and ADSL finally reached this god-forsaken land. Of course, now I get sent more games than I have time to play anyway, so the CDs just go straight in the bin as soon as the magazine arrives. :) |

3DR will likely never do exclusive cover CD's. The whole idea is just silly. If a magazine wants to put the demo on a CD great! But don't ask us to limit distribution by giving it to you first. That's just stoooopid! The thing that matters is uploading it to a zillion ftp sites so anyone that wants it can get it. Magazines can help facilitate that. But a lot are lame and say "If it's not exclusive we don't want it." Fine, you're not getting it then ;) George Broussard, 3D Realms |

Steve, <quote>I'd never tell that to anyone, but some other magazines that shall remain nameless do this all the time with previews as well as demos. </quote> Yeah I had a recent experience with 2 magzines that was funny as hell. We'll call them Mag A and Mag B. Mag A calls and wants to cover DNF in a round up of 10 games that save the pc etc etc. They want exclusive shots. We balk and they decide to do it anwyay. Classy guys. Mag B calls 2 weeks later with a "10 best games to anticipate" piece. They want DNF and some new screens. We balk. They say "no screen, no coverage". We walk away. Really freakin' sad that because we didn't give them 1-2 shots, DNF is now NOT a Top 10 game to anticipate? What does that say for their magazine?
