GoD Bites The Devine Apple
July 29th 2000, 02:08 CEST by andy There appears to be some disagreement within the upper echelons of the development world. Nothing unusual about that, of course, but this disagreement is about Apple's support for game developers and publishers, an issue which shouldn't really lend itself to subjective views... In a recent interview, Gathering of Developers' Mike Wilson commented: "Apple has basically abandoned gaming as a priority, and therefore most game publishers are abandoning it. [...] We have been very vocal about our support of Apple and the Mac up to now, but I have to say that there has been no reciprocity whatsoever." He has since updated his .plan file to clarify: "My comments about lack of support were solely geared toward publisher/marketing related support. I'm mostly disappointed that [Apple's] marketing direction has nothing to do with gaming." In contrast to this, last week Id Software's Graeme Devine commented on his experience at the MacWorld show: "Walking around the show floor and talking to the various Mac developers and publishers it's clear that the level of support Apple is providing across the game community is making a huge and positive difference." He concluded: "Apple is really there for game developers right now." So what's going on? Why does Graeme report that game publishers are pleased with Apple's support, when Mike claims that "most game publishers are abandoning" the Mac? |

I didn't realize until now that the film may have influenced my post in which I wanted to trick the trendy types of the world into eating pond scum. The Stuff's plot centered around a sweet white goo (The Stuff!) is seeping up from the ground and a company turns it into the country's best selling dessert. I guess subconsciously that film inspired my master plan to fool the trendy of the world. I guess my master plan had a positive aspect to it, at least pond scum is 100% natural and 'from the earth'.. or someother health food crazy phrase. |

Heehee.. "Hulka's amazing I Can't Believe It's Not Yogurt! It's 100% organic, natural in every way, fortified with vitamins, nutrients, and the tiny carcasses of waterbugs! Look for it where you buy other edible crap!" |
|
Oh man.. That gives me an idea. I've got to a hidden camera sometime soon! Setup in my local grocery store and have test tastes of "Hulka's New Surpise!" and have people try it, then when they spit it out and make a disgusting look on their face I'll tell them, it's cat food. That's probably been done before, but it's something I've always wanted to do. I love Candid Camera! |

Hmmm... a different Andy, I assume. Back vaguely on-topic, and this is from an interview with Graeme Devine, talking about new features in the q3a add-on: <quote> you’ll be able to define your own clan, your own clan colors. When you play on a map, your base will have your clan colors, your clan icon. All the players on your team will have that icon on them, so that you’ll be able to easily recognize who they are, whether you’re playing home or away, red or blue. </quote> Sounds pretty cool. Probably took all of ten minutes to implement, but I'll bet it adds a lot to gameplay -- and to the community -- as clans will be able to have a stronger identity. Does 3DR have a clan? You can't trademark colours! ;-) (Cue various people telling me that you can trademark colours. Yes, I know, but not in this case you couldn't.) |

I just got back from the hospital where I demanded the nurses give me that tar-like substance to alleviate the pressure on my belly. They didn't want to give it to me at first. They said I didn't really need it and I was just looking for attention. They weren't very compassionate. I don't think any of them know how it feels to have a large piece of cake lodged in your belly that causes extreme discomfort. I understand most nurses wouldn't have experience dealing with this sort of a situation, but that's no excuse. Maybe it's time to make it a pre-requisite for all nurses to know how to deal with the emotional aspect of handling a patient trying to cope with pressure on his/her belly as a result of eating too much cake too quickly. They eventually did give me a nice big cup of that tar, which made me throw up. I feel much better now that the cake isn't putting all that pressure on my belly. The only problem is that my teeth are really black and I can't get the taste of tar out of my mouth. I've brushed my teeth three times in the last hour, but that hasn't had any effect. I think tommorow I will probably have to go to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned. That piece of cake is going to cost me a fortune. |
|
I get the feeling that a point is being made by our cake eating friend, but I can't figure out what it is... |

This is completely off-topic, but I guess I'm going to have to check into CrapSpy or something. I'm sick of the CSS for this site; when people bold stuff, I keep moving my mouse over it only to find it's not a link! This was especially bad reading Derek's posts, because he'd bold "proof" but it'd just be bold. |

#55 "Andy" wrote... <QUOTE> George, what did you think of Paradroid 90? (Assuming you played it...) </QUOTE> I doubt you guys know this but I worked at CU Amiga for several years and persisted through to the twilight years where there were no games but the technical side of things was still very cool. Not unlike the Linux situation actually. Anyhow, I had a point. Paradroid 90, total class. Believe it or not in my top drawer I have an updated version of this that the One True God sent me (Andrew Braybrook). It has nifty stuff like spent shells bouncing on the ground that was the prototype for the same system in Virocop (which I LOVED). Unfortunately it's been written in some heavy duty copy protection system, Rob Northern or something? So it was never copied and remains the only copy that I know of. God, to be honest it's a loose disk in my top draw and has been coinhabiting this place with 50 thousand PC case screws and asprin foils and chequebook stubs - it probably doesn't work any more... It certainly wont run under UAE. It would work on my A4000 monitor stand though, assuming that it actually works after all these years. Hmmm, wonder if the One True God would give permition to have it duplicated somehow and slapped up on a site? I must drop him a line and see what he's up to. Probably something corporate and horrible on a console. Mat P.S. I demand a cheer, this is the first two handed typing I have done for 2 months since I fractured my right humerus in a drunken arm wrestling bout with my clan. |

Of course there's no way I could get publisher permision. He might be able to supply something that could be copied and it might end up on some emulator site by accident. Paradroid was cool. Didnt Graftgold go bust? They also did the Rainbow Islands conversion although I dont think it was the best Amiga game ever as some magazines labeled it. I prefered bubble bobble even if the graphics were crappier, it truly was a blast in 2player mode :) |

I'm doing the Desperately Seeking Braybrook thing right now :) Oh yes, Andrew Hewson (Hewson Consultants, Uridium remember? The guy Braybrook claims stiffed him in the 8-bit era) has some new online gaming venture going in the UK. Not saying much about it but I'm going to meet him at ECTS (The UK poor man's E3) and see what's doing. Mat |

I remember, because they had a screenshot of some guys running towards a base which had a logo on it, and one of the TF team (Robin I think it was) said that the logo and colours on the map would change depending on the team playing (ie the logo would be replaced by the team/clans logo etc). I'm sure it's just a coincidence though. No point in tring to make a huge conspiracy out of it. Oh hang on a second, this is PlanetCrap. Stop the presses!!! |

<quote>URIDIUM ROCKED THE FUCKING PLANET!</quote> OMFG! How good was that game! Neo Geo emulator + Metal Slug ROM = Heaven That game is so mind-blowingly awesome, it defies description. And you know what? The gameplay, graphics and sound put most PC games I've played to shame -- and it's a game for a different machine running on an emulator! |
|
Metal Slug is an amazing game, I agree. I probably blew upwards of $100 playing that on arcade to the point that I could beat it on a single quarter. I miss the old Contra-esque sidescrolling action games. I guess MS hit the peak and we haven't seen anything better since. MS 2 really wasn't all that great. |

Darkseid-[D!] wrote in post #111: <quote>whats the difference, between owning roms and owning mp3s. </quote> Easy. Most ROMs that people own are discontinued, and can not be found anywhere. NES, Atari, Neo Geo, whatever the hell people are emulating. That's NOT illegal. Emulating the SNES and other still running systems IS illegal, however. I'm not sure about how all of the laws for this work, but that's how it is. Take a trip to classicgaming.com, and visit their vault. That's a pure example of what's legal and what is not. -- Dethstryk Damage Gaming |

The difference, actually, is that no company gives a crap about the free distribution of games which they can no longer sell. Apathy != legality. You're still breaking the law, whether anybody cares that you are or not. |

If you want to get into technicalities, sure. Technically, ROM images of discontinued games aren't legal, but like the site said, it's like jaywalking. -- Dethstryk Damage Gaming |

#111, Darkseid-[D!]: <QUOTE> whats the difference, between owning roms and owning mp3s. </QUOTE> Two main differences: 1. I'd guess that most people only use the ROMs/images of games that they already own, but are unable to play because the machine doesn't work anymore. I think most people who are into emulation are playing for nostalgic reasons. It's not retro-piracy, it's retro-gaming. 2. I've spoken to several old Spectrum developers about this, and I've heard anecdotes of many others, and the only opinion I ever hear is "sure, enjoy it!". The people that made the games, and in somes cases have the rights to them, do not mind people downloading and using ROMs. Is there a comparison between ROMs and MP3s? Yes, of course there is. But then, you don't hear me claiming that I've got a "right" to play ROMs, do you? And you don't hear me complain when a copyright holder tries to close a ROM site down. |

Another will pop up, and if not, I've still got the mp3s, mine to listen to, free (well, I pay for the bandwith etc.). I consider myself a retro listener because all the songs are old and I can't be bothered to buy them (quote of the nano ;-). When all is said and done, the big difference is that you choose to justify one. I do the same for mp3s. I don't really care about ROMs so I can say "thats a terrible thing [stealing]".
