GoD Bites The Devine Apple
July 29th 2000, 02:08 CEST by andy

There appears to be some disagreement within the upper echelons of the development world. Nothing unusual about that, of course, but this disagreement is about Apple's support for game developers and publishers, an issue which shouldn't really lend itself to subjective views...

In a recent interview, Gathering of Developers' Mike Wilson commented: "Apple has basically abandoned gaming as a priority, and therefore most game publishers are abandoning it. [...] We have been very vocal about our support of Apple and the Mac up to now, but I have to say that there has been no reciprocity whatsoever."

He has since updated his .plan file to clarify: "My comments about lack of support were solely geared toward publisher/marketing related support. I'm mostly disappointed that [Apple's] marketing direction has nothing to do with gaming."

In contrast to this, last week Id Software's Graeme Devine commented on his experience at the MacWorld show: "Walking around the show floor and talking to the various Mac developers and publishers it's clear that the level of support Apple is providing across the game community is making a huge and positive difference." He concluded: "Apple is really there for game developers right now."

So what's going on? Why does Graeme report that game publishers are pleased with Apple's support, when Mike claims that "most game publishers are abandoning" the Mac?

</QUOTE>
It didn't work properly. :-(

The sound was all crackly and juddery, and I couldn't even get past the menu screen because neither the keyboard or the mouse did anything.

I don't think there was anything wrong with the image, I'm guessing that I just didn't have AIAB set up properly, and I was a bit busy at the time so I gave up and forgot about it. I'll give it another go soon.

Heh, I'm just thinking -- what do you bet the new Amiga is going to take over the world, and all of us predicting the future of PC/Mac/console gaming are going to look stoopid? Stranger things have happened...

Oh man, I remember reading about this when I was researching an article on game remakes. It's a shame that it seems to suffer from the same problem as loads of other remakes -- work starts, work goes well, everyone gets excited, and then nothing else happens.

The remake I was most looking forward to playing was Head Over Heels, but the project was abandoned. Someone else did a remake of Batman, which used the same game system, and it was hoped he might have a go at doing HoH, but I've never heard any more about it.

Jet Set Willy, Lords of Midnight and Skool Daze were other "big name" remakes. I could never get JSW to work, and I'm not interested in LoM so I haven't tried it, but Skool Daze is a very impressive piece of work, complete with music by a guy called 4-Mat who Amiga owners may remember from the demo group Anarchy.

Dammit. This was a good, solid Mac bashing thread until someone just HAD to mention the Amiga ... and now we're into another thread listening to "the hardcore" masturbate over shitty games on a dead platform.

Oh wait... ;)

(just kidding ... Yes, I had an Amiga 500 and an Amiga 2000 ... both rocked. :)

George, what did you think of Paradroid 90? (Assuming you played it...)
And what would you say was your favourite Amiga game? </quote>

Too many to list:

Sword of Shodan, Shadow of the Beast, Defender of the Crown, Fairy Tale Adventure (Diablo 12 years ago) and many, many more.

I think I have close to 1000 games ;) I need to make disk images and burn them to CD actually as the disks tend to fade over time.

I just finished eating a huge piece of cake. This piece of cake was so massive in size that my belly feels bigger than it ever has before.

I can't believe the amount of pressure this fully-eaten and half-digested piece of cake is putting on the inside of my belly.

Next time I will eat a smaller piece of cake.

What kind of cake was it?

Chocolate cake? Angel cake? Cream cake? Dundee cake? Madera cake? Hash cake? Birthday cake?

Also, do you like buiscits? If so, which kind? Shortbread? Rich tea? Lemon Bon-Bons? Digestive? Chocolate? If so, which? Milk or Plain?

Me? I'm a bread and jam fan. But as for what kinds of jam, as the old saying goes, that's another story...

Bread and Jam? What are you some sort of codger? These days it's all about the chocolate chip cookies with milk! Damn man, join the '90s! ;)

As fot the "death" of the Mac Gaming thang, sure it's withered and wheezing in an overstuffed bed, using a bedpan and ringing for its nurse, but it's far from dead. Hell there are people out there developing for things like the old TI-99/4A (Blue Sky Rangers, anyone?) still. And you know tha's gotta be out of either a whacked-out sense of nostalgia, or one over-amplified sense of the absurd.

Still, George, I gotta ask (and it had been touched on a time or two by us in passing before), if by some quirk of fate Mac gaming became profitable enough for you to consider again, how would you prefer to do it: porting or a full-time Mac programmer? I ask simply out of curiosity (as some houses go one way, and others...th other).

I'm in the '00s and Bread and Jam is the new Cookies and Milk!

You can have, let's see, strawberry, black cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry, (see, jam isn't racist), there's goosberry, rapsberry, rubarb. The choice is nearly endless!

If you stretch a point, you can toast your bread and have marmalade, be it orange, lemon, lime, five-fruit, thin cut or thick cut. Toast and honey works, too.

As for beverage, why, I think you'll find it's PG-Tips tea, nice and stong, one sugar, milk.

Porting. We're a PC house. Period. We're not doing Mac, PS2 or any other platforms in the immediate future. Not until PC gaming stops being profitable.

But clearly we'd like our games on whatever platforms are viable.

It was a triple chocolate fudge cake. It's now been several hours since I first consumed it, but the pressure on my belly is still unbearable.

I'm thinking of going to the hospital to get some of that tar they give to people when they need you to throw up.

I'm not a big fan of vomitting, but the cake-induced pressure on my belly is too much for me to handle. I'm hoping after I drink a cup of that tar-like fluid I can throw up and the pressure on my belly will be alleviated, so I can be comfortable once again.

To Flamey, Chris Johnson and Cake Eater,
Get this straight!

The '00's consisted of Bread and Jam being Cookies and Milk, but only til June 30th, the 2nd half of the year, it's all been switched to Yogurt. And not any kind of Yogurt, it must be Strawberry, the kind with the fruit in the bottom. It's the kind where you can't immediately eat it unless you stir up the fruit, otherwise it's just nasty gurt with no fruit.

I have a plan though!

==========(Hulka Rubs Hands Together)====================

I say we come out with a product called "I can't believe it's not Yogurt", then after all the trendy types start eating it and talking about how great it is, we come out and publically state that it isn't Yogurt, it's pond scum we used food coloring on.

Ya know, the one game I've really, really, really wanted in the last year has been that Tomb Raider game on the GameBoy that came out last month, but I don't have a GameBoy. I must admit I even tried to find a pirate ROM, but I couldn't.

I'm *this* close to buying a GameBoy, just to play that one game.

Some sort of side-scrolling Duke game could be a hell of a lot of fun.

Of course, thinking about this means I've now got to dig out my Duke CD and install the first two games, which I've never been able to get into...

BTW, note to other developers: Duke CD -- the game you want, two other free games, lots of demos, and level/art editors. Gives you that fuzzy feeling of 'extra' value for money. Think about it.

I just had a quick look to see what I could find in the way of _OLD_ games. The best I could do with a really quick search, is find a copy of 'Easten Front 1941' by Chris Crawford released in 1981.

Reading the manual, it still looks like a good game. I wonder what the odd's are that the *cassette* that it came on still works? :)

Endless yes, but is it all actually good?

And as for Jam not being racist, chocolate chip cookies have the dark bits and the light bits altogether in there (especially if you get those great chocolate chip/macadamia nut cookies)... not only are they not racist, they're integrated too! ;)

And as for beverage, a nice hot tea with sugar and milk might be nice (I have no idea what the hell PG-Tips tea is though, excuse my colonial ignorance), but some days you have to say the hell with it, and go for a nice cup of chocolatey ovaltine! (/me accepts his check from the Ovaltine company and cashes it post-haste)

Actually, YES, I have seen it, shortly after it's short release in theaters on BETA in 1995. I didn't realize until now that the film may have influenced my post in which I wanted to trick the trendy types of the world into eating pond scum.

The Stuff's plot centered around a sweet white goo (The Stuff!) is seeping up from the ground and a company turns it into the country's best selling dessert.

I guess subconsciously that film inspired my master plan to fool the trendy of the world. I guess my master plan had a positive aspect to it, at least pond scum is 100% natural and 'from the earth'.. or someother health food crazy phrase.

Hmmm... a different Andy, I assume.

Back vaguely on-topic, and this is from an interview with Graeme Devine, talking about new features in the q3a add-on:
<quote>
you’ll be able to define your own clan, your own clan colors. When you play on a map, your base will have your clan colors, your clan icon. All the players on your team will have that icon on them, so that you’ll be able to easily recognize who they are, whether you’re playing home or away, red or blue.
</quote>
Sounds pretty cool. Probably took all of ten minutes to implement, but I'll bet it adds a lot to gameplay -- and to the community -- as clans will be able to have a stronger identity.

Does 3DR have a clan? You can't trademark colours! ;-)

(Cue various people telling me that you can trademark colours. Yes, I know, but not in this case you couldn't.)

I just got back from the hospital where I demanded the nurses give me that tar-like substance to alleviate the pressure on my belly.

They didn't want to give it to me at first. They said I didn't really need it and I was just looking for attention. They weren't very compassionate. I don't think any of them know how it feels to have a large piece of cake lodged in your belly that causes extreme discomfort.

I understand most nurses wouldn't have experience dealing with this sort of a situation, but that's no excuse. Maybe it's time to make it a pre-requisite for all nurses to know how to deal with the emotional aspect of handling a patient trying to cope with pressure on his/her belly as a result of eating too much cake too quickly.

They eventually did give me a nice big cup of that tar, which made me throw up. I feel much better now that the cake isn't putting all that pressure on my belly. The only problem is that my teeth are really black and I can't get the taste of tar out of my mouth. I've brushed my teeth three times in the last hour, but that hasn't had any effect.

I think tommorow I will probably have to go to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned. That piece of cake is going to cost me a fortune.

I doubt you guys know this but I worked at CU Amiga for several years and persisted through to the twilight years where there were no games but the technical side of things was still very cool. Not unlike the Linux situation actually.

Anyhow, I had a point. Paradroid 90, total class. Believe it or not in my top drawer I have an updated version of this that the One True God sent me (Andrew Braybrook). It has nifty stuff like spent shells bouncing on the ground that was the prototype for the same system in Virocop (which I LOVED).

Unfortunately it's been written in some heavy duty copy protection system, Rob Northern or something? So it was never copied and remains the only copy that I know of. God, to be honest it's a loose disk in my top draw and has been coinhabiting this place with 50 thousand PC case screws and asprin foils and chequebook stubs - it probably doesn't work any more...

It certainly wont run under UAE. It would work on my A4000 monitor stand though, assuming that it actually works after all these years. Hmmm, wonder if the One True God would give permition to have it duplicated somehow and slapped up on a site?

I must drop him a line and see what he's up to. Probably something corporate and horrible on a console.

P.S. I demand a cheer, this is the first two handed typing I have done for 2 months since I fractured my right humerus in a drunken arm wrestling bout with my clan.

Oh yes, Andrew Hewson (Hewson Consultants, Uridium remember? The guy Braybrook claims stiffed him in the 8-bit era) has some new online gaming venture going in the UK. Not saying much about it but I'm going to meet him at ECTS (The UK poor man's E3) and see what's doing.

<quote>you’ll be able to define your own clan, your own clan colors. When you play on a map, your base will have your clan colors, your clan icon. All the players on your team will have that icon on them, so that you’ll be able to easily recognize who they are, whether you’re playing home or away, red or blue. </quote>

This sounds suspiciously like the first bit of news about Team Fortress 2, released waaaay back in mid-98! I remember, because they had a screenshot of some guys running towards a base which had a logo on it, and one of the TF team (Robin I think it was) said that the logo and colours on the map would change depending on the team playing (ie the logo would be replaced by the team/clans logo etc).

I'm sure it's just a coincidence though. No point in tring to make a huge conspiracy out of it.

Oh hang on a second, this is PlanetCrap. Stop the presses!!!

OMFG! How good was that game! I played that religously on the C64, never managed to finish the bastard as I always got a couple of stages past tungsten and got stuck in the double switch-back thing.

Hmmm, I think I'll have to go hunt for a C64 emulator now.

Speaking of console and high-res TV's ... I was considering picking up a DreamCast the other day, but since I don't have a TV, I wanted to see if there was some way to run the video on my computer monitor. So I go to Sony's site ... sure enough, they have a cable for it! But what's that? It only works with certain games? :( </QUOTE>

You mentioned your TV card in that Linux thread. Just plug the console into it and you're golden :-)

Oops. It was a ZIP drive, right?

Anyway, a TV card is a nice thing so you'd probably want to get yourself one of those babies anyway...
