The Real Half-Life 2 Thread
November 12th 2004, 20:46 CET by Anonymous

After countless delays and marketing blunders which kept Half Life fans and ATi customers around the world on the edge of a nervous breakdown, the long anticipated, game play redefining and hyped up beyond belief Half-Life 2 enters the arena. Please discuss.

Shadarr, a game that combined the 'screw anyone' bits of Fable, the 'raise a beasty' bits of Monster Rancher, and the 'small-farm community' theme of Harvest Moon would make my head explode.

One of you damnable programmers should make it happen. Singlehandedly.

Now.

I need someone to do the art.

That would indeed be a kickass game.  And despite my spooging over the graphics in Harvest Moon, make it 2D pls.

I actually have a lot of sprites already drawn for just this game. My protagonist was a little Robot who was the equivalent of a recently freed slave. His goal was to make money raising monsters on his farm for the equivalent of cock fighting.

I did several of the monsters, him, a floosey-chick, a referee... All sorts of crap. Sprites out the wazoo. I promptly realized I could never program it, though.

That could work, I'll be damned before I start coding a 3D engine no matter if Charles says it's easy.

Most of that kind of game is stats-based monster customization. There'd be minimal involvement in the battling; I'd rather your treatment of the monsters influenced it's behavior more than have the monster directly controlled ala Monster Rancher.

An Animal Crossing/Harvest Moon like community with the stat-building, animal raising backend would be cool.

shadarr@yahoo.com http://digital-luddite.com
Yeah, that all sounds cool.  I just think the robot main character wouldn't work with the "fuck anybody" game mechanic.  Unless part of the backstory is that he's a decomissioned military rape-bot.

Well, the fuck like mad aspect of the game wasn't an idea until earlier in this thread.

The idea I had for the game was as follows: You start off leasing your land from a greedy landowner. You progress through the game making money by farming, raising livestock, odd-jobs, what have you. After you have enough money to upgrade your livestock pen another recently freed robot comes to you and tells you how to make big money (the monster fights). You raise a few monsters, your barn gets upgraded with the profits (which unlocks monster types not available before 'cause your old barn was too small to raise an abominable snowman in), and eventually you buy the land outright and overthrow the greedy landowner.

Something like that. I'm better at drawing than I am at game design, obviously.

shadarr@yahoo.com http://digital-luddite.com
If you put your monsters in the same pen with your livestock, or you don't build reinforced fences, the monster should go on a rampage.

I would love to help out with this game, but unfortunately I have nothing to offer except Ideas.

Well then, we just need some coders, level designers....

Actually, I could probably do level design if I had the time.  But I don't.

I could do coding or level design...

...If I knew how to do either of those things.

LAME

Today is March 21, 2003--the start of the second war in Iraq, which is a fitting parallel to the battle Newell is about to start with the announcement of Half-Life 2 and its release date. Like the second American offensive in Iraq, Newell's battle will begin today with a shock-and-awe campaign of spectacular visual firepower--the first demo of the game. Unfortunately, the parallels don't stop there. From the perspective of many fans, Newell's battle to release Half-Life 2 will also end up being a campaign filled with misinformation. And at times there will seem to be no exit strategy for Newell, no clear sense of when victory--the release of the game--will be achieved.

Maybe instead of creating maps from whole cloth you could just set the game in your neighbourhood after the apocalypse, and base your levels off that.

That's a really interesting article and well worth reading and everything, however for those who haven't clicked yet, it's TWENTY-FIVE FRICKEN PAGES LONG.

It also just occurred to me that Valve missed an opportunity by not releasing HL Source last week, give people a sort of warm-up for the real thing.

An' much repec' to my man Prostyle.  My topic is now in limbo, I might rework it and post it or maybe just trash it, it'll never live up to the hype anyway.

Can't you guys make a 'goober chat' thread to discuss your silly console games instead of hijacking this one?

Anonymous's claim that he just finished half-life2 and it sucked is something we're going to be seeing more of...not because it actually will suck, but because right now there is a ravenous horde of morons downloading the old leaked beta version on bittorrent probably thinking it's the full version.  So get ready for an onslaught of morons like 'anonymous' judging the game from that unfinished version.

Personally I've never been tempted to download the leaked version.  I don't even want to see it.  I'm just waiting patiently for tuesday when I can play the real thing.

It reminds me of when Star Wars Episode 1 came out and my best friend downloaded it and watched it on his computer.  It was a badly compressed low rez scan of a handheld camcorder recording.  It looked really bad.  So when my friend told me he thought it sucked I asked wtf is wrong with you?  You haven't really seen the friggin movie, your opinion doesn't count.  Every time I hear someone say that Ep1 had crap speacial effects or whatever I think of that and wonder if they saw it in a theater or watched the same crappy scan my friend watched on his PC.

Regardless of all the hate over Jar-Jar and midocloriens or whatever, criticizing the movie on it's bad visual effects that were state-of-the-art at the time is bullshit.  Even if you hated the movie for a dozen reasons the special effects can't be one of them.  Ditto AOTC.

Some people are just that way though.  You can take the best of anything and they will proudly announce that it sucks, just because that's what they do.

I thought the special effects made the movie suck, but because it leaned way too much on them. Also, while the CGI may not have been bad at all, I thought they showed very little creativity with the ship and fighter designs. Especially the Naboo fighters looked like a 5 minute job.

An update: Best Buys are selling it today, according to at least one store employee and a good number of people who have been there. Wal-mart and CompUSA are also on this list.

If they don't unlock it now, they're asking for it. There have already been stories of seeing people bitch to employees over HL2 not working, because neither the store employees or the customers know anything about Steam.
