PeerCast
August 3rd 2002, 19:00 MSD by Morn PeerCast is a P2P Shoutcast relaying system. It basically allows anyone with a net connection to broadcast audio streams to the net without setting up a Shoutcast server. And best of all, it works. No, not much to discuss here. I'm simply in love with this funky tool, which for some reason has been getting much less attention than it deserves. And hey, you can even catch MiniCrapRadio on it. Funky! So, download it, test it, and report bugs in the PeerCast forums. |

I'm currently broadcast MiniCrapRadio from my home connection. I'm transferring the "official" CrapRadio files to my home machine right now, so if the stream starts buffering, it's because ADSL sucks. ;-) But it should work, I think. Potentially dumb question coming up: How does this affect one's bandwidth on a personal connection? If I were to set one up and I get a lot of listeners, am I going to see a slow down on my connection? "I can't drink POSSIBLE beers! I need ACTUAL beers! Damn you quantum physics!"
Okay, so I wanted to broadcast something and I looked for help on the site: PeerCast is currently compatible with Icecast/Shoutcast MP3 streams. You simply need to point the source provider (such as OddCast) to the PeerCast client. I'm not sure I get this. I thought you didn't have to set up a Shoutcast server? (Which I've never done.) "I can't drink POSSIBLE beers! I need ACTUAL beers! Damn you quantum physics!"
You risk opening up a rip in the sock of space time. Which is a real bitch to darn. I believe I can fly......urk.
That's a risk I'm willing to take. "I can't drink POSSIBLE beers! I need ACTUAL beers! Damn you quantum physics!"
I'll just stand over......here then. I believe I can fly......urk.
Caryn, I believe what they are saying is that the Peercast client is protocol-compatible with Shoutcast. So for software that can read shoutcast streams, you can tell it to hit a Peercast client (which, in P2P fashion, is also a server) and it will 'just work'. And if you do stream your own station, it shouldn't totally kill your bandwidth because of the shared nature of the network, though upon first glance I'm not sure how it decides priority of streams and lots of other details that make me wonder how it works in practice. Guess I'll have to download it and check it out |

Topic pushed to the front page by evil Morn! Soon Crapradio will own all our PCs. So there.

I installed PeerCast, and although I was skeptical and hesitant at first, I soon became enamored. It's the Right Kind™ of application, it's small and well-behaved and functional. It just works. YMMV. But CrapRadio is just plain great. |
Hm. I may have to mess with this. |

#10 by BobJustBob Bob get your ass in irc, I need something from you! "This is also gay."

Morn, I started listening, but then got sucked into the Pure 80's channel. They were playing Peter Murphy. No longer must I sweep for you, for I am not your broom.
Okay, so I'm broadcasting (Rebel Storm - my dad's band), but I'm told in IRC there's a hiccup every 2-3 seconds, and some can't connect. I do have 3 connections, though, and it was pretty easy to set up. "I can't drink POSSIBLE beers! I need ACTUAL beers! Damn you quantum physics!"

If I were to set this thing up on my PC, would I be able to broadcast my wang to all female listeners? Because if i can't, the software sucks. By the way, I feel very morny.....err..horny tonight. I might be running out of handlotion later on. Also, having seen their avatar, I think Caryn and Ashiran are trying to tell eachother something. I'm not sure if PeerCast is currently able to find out how much bandwidth there is for sending data, so I think manually setting the maximum outgoing bandwidth is probably a good idea. Just disable the "Server" checkbox, you'll be able to change those settings then. Hendrik "Morn" Mans • morn@planetcrap.com • admin/coder/lover/kraut

Joker, if it works with MP3 streams, it will probably work with video streams, too -- as long as there is enough bandwidth. Mmm, PornCast! Hendrik "Morn" Mans • morn@planetcrap.com • admin/coder/lover/kraut

Caryn, there's a tutorial somewhere on setting up broadcasting with Winamp, PeerCast and Oddcast (a Winamp plugin that basically does the same thing as the Shoutcast DSP plugin you can get on shoutcast.com). Obviously all this needs to be simpler in the long run, and as far as I know, there are plans to create an integrated PeerCast Winamp plugin that does all the P2P stuff *and* broadcasting in one. I got around to loading the DLL, and the plug in, but the darn thing (oddcast) refuses to connect... Could it be because of my slow-ass connection? Could it be that the "LAME" plug in, is "lame"? We will never now, becaus I frankly can't be bothered... like Morn says, it needs to be simpler... |
#18 So how long before you set up C R A P T V ? I'd tune in every night before going to sleep for my err....my meditation. And yes, it involves handlotion. It's some new hindu thing. Never mind. Joker, Ph.D. Procedural Assholian Behaviour, Pedophilosopher

Well, I'm kind of disappointed. I was able to recieve just fine, but for the life of me I can't seem to sucessfully broadcast. I'm sure it's something happening with the router or the firewall, but it makes me sad. |

Hugin: Ditto. Oddcast doesn't seem to want to connect. Oh well. Understand? Good. Play! -- Hatsumi-Sensei

Actually, I worked at it some more, with much patient volunteer listening attempts from None-1a, Veespike, and Gabe, and was finally able to stream, at least to None-1a. The documentation for how to configure everything is terrible, this little tutorial is somewhat of a help. |
For some reason I can't even stream the stuff, it just sits in my list and says "receiving" constantly, I can never listen. Dissapointing because I'd like to see what other kind of things people like to listen to, obviously. My channel list is only about 18 long as well, this seems kind of shy. I am connected through connect1.peercast.org:7144 , are there any other servers to use or some such? |
Agh, ok... I think i've figured out the listening thing, but the lists are still kind of short it seems. Now, what I really want to know is where can I find the id tags for the songs and artists so I can go and download this stuff in high quality format? I can't seem to find this info anywhere in the player or program, but if all goes according to plan it will present itself to me immediately after I hit the post button. Meh. |
Regarding the small number of broadcasts: only very few people are using PeerCast at this point, and only some of them are broadcasting, so... Regarding ID3 tags: The versions before 0.107 didn't support title/url meta data. The newer versions do, but not everyone on the PeerCast network is using those. That's why you won't get title/url information for some streams. Hendrik "Morn" Mans • morn@planetcrap.com • admin/coder/lover/kraut

w00t! I'm now broadcasting SqueakyRadio! Understand? Good. Play! -- Hatsumi-Sensei
Hey, neat. People are actually listening! 3 of 'em at that. Question: Is it possible to stream the music without having to play the songs? Right now I have it set up where the song is playing in WinAmp and streaming to PeerCast. Is it possible to stream the songs without playing them? Understand? Good. Play! -- Hatsumi-Sensei
So you can listen to another stream at the same time? That should be possible by running two instances of Winamp (there's an option somewhere that allows you to do that). You can also look for other Shoutcast or Icacast compatible "shouter" software. Dunno how much there is available for Windows, but there is some stuff for Linux, like DarkIce. Or the PHP based thing I wrote for CrapRadio. Hendrik "Morn" Mans • morn@planetcrap.com • admin/coder/lover/kraut

Also, the "streams" number is not the number of people listening to your broadcast, it's merely the number of people receiving it from you. There could be more listeners, receiving the broadcast from those. And so on. ;) Hendrik "Morn" Mans • morn@planetcrap.com • admin/coder/lover/kraut
